GRAMMA'S CHRISTMAS CAKE As I look back on the years I realise just what Christmas meant to us as a family get together, It was a time of peace and joy, love and sharing. We used to bundle up nice and warmly and trudge through the snow to the shed where Dad would get the axe and a rope for us to start on a tree hunt. Soon we would fine people and only three of us get up early. On Christmas day my By Philip Robinson May its arrival fill hearts, homes with joy. Thanks for your confidence. D.C. They were very one but mom would say, "No, it's too small", or Lois, my oldest sister would say "No that's as skinny as a -rake", or Jeffery would argue over how fat it should be. We usually did quarrel over the poor tree but everything would turn out fine and we always found the perfect tree, or at least we thought it was. Dad would then fasten the rope to the trunk of the tree so he and Jeffery could haul it over the crisp layer of snow. I usually got the job of carrying the axe. My Dad gave me the axe because I would pay attention to what I was doing. Otherwise I would djlly dally and fall behind and I would usually get lost. When we arrived home Dad would build a fire for us to get warm. Quickly we would feel nice and cozy in our sweaters mom had knit "for us when we were little guys. Mom then would start popping popcorn for us to decorate the tree with. We would make paper chains { and a bit of tinsel mom had would be put around the tree. Dad would always have the honour of putting the star on the top of our perfect tree. I used to when I was little but now Dad said I was getting too big to lift. As we decorated the tree, I could smell the delicous smell of the goose cooking in the oven and mom would always make carrot pudding, vegetables and Gramma's Christmas Cake. Every Christmas it was the thing I ¢ waited for most of all." I used to help Gramma and Mom make it by running down to the store and getting the cherries and nuts for the delicous cake. That night after Christmas I would wish that the next day would be Christmas all over again, and again, and again, just so we could have some of my favourite cake. Well now you know what Christmas was like then. It still is fun RX stopped thinking, there came a knock at the door. I opened it and there stood Mom and Gramma with the greatest Christmas present ever, Gramma"s Christ- mas Cake. Liz Baxter Grade 6 Prince Albert P.S.
