By Dean J. Kelly .The shocking evidence that cancer death rates have jumped from between 5.2 per cent to 7 per cent in the first 6 to 7 months of 1975 in the U.S. has cancer special- ists looking in new direct- ions for causes. The normal death rate is only 1 per cent a year for the past 30 years. An 'increase of 420 to 600 percent in seven months has been termed "epidemic" and a 'time bomb" by researchers, The journal Cancer Re- search in a 300 page report he The night before Christmas and at our house, everybody was stirring. The stocking, hung at the foot of the bed with care, had been removed by my wife with a pair of tongs, and a clean sock was substituted (over the young lad'b objections). In the kitchen, my wife was having stove problems. The bottom of the 10-pound gobbler was roasted to a charcoal black, while the nerves in the still-raw top were still twitching (we ate the middle). For the first time in 364 days -- due to ominous warnings -- thé kids were listening 2 what they were told and were sitting quietly i front of the television. 'Me? Under the tree again, this time making sure the tripod would hold by nailing the legs to the linoleum floor. Erected a couple of days before Christmas Eve, the tree was a structure of skinny brown sticks, shiny ornaments, tinsel and colored lights connected by a green wire. The needles, of the short variety, lay in a blanket three inches deep around the base of the tree. ...Beware of the dealer who sticks this year's trees in a bucket of water for next year's sale. To top it all off, stereo FM was broadcasting Christmas music, which at times was a screech- ing of guitar and voice in an updated rendition of 'White Christmas or Santa in the- Sky with DidMonds. Indeed, it was the festive season. It was a winter wonderland outside, with the snow drifting about and crisp, sharp winds curling under the door, across the living room and up bare legs under the housecoat. (it doesn't pay to scrimp on weatherstripping). At our place, presents are opened Christmas Eve (a hold-over from my European upbringing and a life saver for a hang-over later in life). So at about 8 p.m., we turned off the lights, lit the candles plugged in the tree, listened to Christmas carols, and had a shot or two as the kids sat drooling at all the goodies under the tree. P.S. You may ask, as my wife did, how you explain St. Nick if the kids are up and around all the time? From experience, | have found that any youngster who is going to believe that a bearded fat guy rides in an airborne sleigh behind eigh reindeer, stuffs himself down chimneys, and gives away valuable toys...any youngster who believes all that, can surely believe that Santa popped in while he or she was upstairs on the potty Anyhow; Santa came and went, and dad was getting pretty excited about all those nifty toys the finance company had bought his son. Then, an hour later, it was all over, with some "casualties reported already. Only when electrical equipment is unplugged should it be attempted with one's teeth). There were other surprises as well, like the deluxe houseburning set junior got from his gramma. The set is incorrectly called Deluxe Woodburning Outfit. | have left the strictest instrustions with the young lad that initials, designs, or drawings can be burned only into those pieces of wood which are not attached to the house. From his grandmother, next year, he wants a box of hand grenades. All in all...and | think | can vouch for everyone...a good time was had at our place. Christmas. Another one for the record. (Stripping-- suggests that nutritional factors...high animal fat in- take, excessive alcolhol, deficiencies in Vitamins A & C, certain food additives and contaminents in food are related to possibly 11 types of human cancers. The following are suggestions to help avoid the most dreaded of all diseases...cancer. 1. Eat lots of food with high fiber content like bran, cab- - bage, raw foods. Highly processed foods have been linked to heart disease, (sugar) gallbladder, alcoholism and dozens of other diseases). 'Avoid white bread and sugar. (The iron in enriched white bread and foods can destroy Vit. E). 2. Avoid foods containing additives and food colorings. --- Check the label, 3. Avoid high-fat content foods (potato chips, dough- nuts, ete): 4. Avoid artificial sweetners (saccarin and diet soft drinks). * 5. Don't eat food or water that's been stored in vinyl chloride (plastic) con- tainers. 6. Avoid the 'use of aerosol sprays. 7. If you live in a highly polluted area use an air purifier in the home. 8. Carefully air out all dry-cleaning before wearing them (chlorinated hydro- carbons). 9. Avoid products contain- ing asbestos (talcum pow- der, etc). 10. If your water is highly chlorinated, use bottled water for dinking, or well water (includes water for frozen juices, powdered milk). 11.7 Avoid unnecessary X-rays. Don't agree to X-rays unless really needed. 12. Don't take drugs unless prescribed by your doctor (some cause cancer). ' 13. Stop smoking. If you can't stop, cut down, use a filter and use only low-tar and low-nicotine products (the last half of the cigarette contains the most harmful substances). 14. Avoid plastic cosmetic implants. 15. Eat more fish and poul- try, (low in saturated fats, high in vits. and minerals). 16. Decrease intake of alcohol and coffee. (Coffee and alcohol act as diuretics increasing the flow of urine depleating the body of all but five of the 40 nutrients required for good health. Alcohol increases the loss of water soluble vitamins and minerals including the vital magnesium needed for nerves and heart muscle, PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1976 -- 5 Help reduce your chances of getting cancer etc. (Calcium cannot be absorbed without magnes- ium present). A study of 2,000 men observed for seven years revealed that those who developed coron- ary disease drank five cups of coffee daily. (Even a single cup of coffee causes a prompt rise in blood fats and cholesterol. Magnesium loss to alcohol was 5 times normal rate). 17. Increase intake of Vita- min A (Halibut fish liver oil, best natural source of Vit. A). Foods rich in "A" are liver, carrots, eggs, margar- ine, dairy products and colored fruits and vegtables. Vitam A is the anti-infective or anti-ophthalmic vitamin (10,000 units daily). 18. Increase Vit. C intake. As it is easily destroyed by heat of cooking, orange juice, citrus fruits, cabbage and green peppers are good raw sources. As one cigar- ette uses up about 25 mg. (the amount in one orange), the only sure way to avoid a deficiency is to take a supplement. Many resear- chers recommend a mini- mum of 500 mg. daily (it takes '30,000 mgs. to make one ounce), as it is used up in the body destroying aller- Zens and poisons from pol- lution, etc. Helps neutralize loxidity of drugs. 19. Selenium mention in the report is found in bran, wheat germ, onions, broc- coli and tuna. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Now that diet has been officially linked to cancer, the best safeguard is good cellular nutrition. Yours for good health, Photography ? Candid Weddings 'SIEBE REKKER © 220 COCHRANE ST.
