Reader's Viewpoint PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1976 -- 5 Offended by article Dear Sir: The Central Ontario Snow- mobile 'Association would like. to comment on your recent article "Snowmobil- ers Tread Softly", Why would an American article 'be printed in a Canadian newspaper, when in fact our Ministry of Natural Resources is active- ly involved in the distribu- tion of monies to Snowmo- bile Clubs to help develop and maintain snowmobile trails in Ontario? We would like to point out that the Ministry of Natural Resources use snowmobiles to take food to the wildlife feed lots and also that the animals use our trail system to travel from one feed lot to another. by Dean J. Kelly Kellys The snowmobile industry has reduced the sound level 94 percent in the last eight years. A muffled 1970 model snowmobile makes less noise than a farm tractor, a motorcycle or a chain saw. A 1975 model snowmobile has an even lower sound level, less than the sound level inside your automobile when you are traveling at 50 mph. The industry manufac- tures quiet snowmobiles that make considerably less noise than either the dish- washer or vacuum cleaner. Another point brought to mind, has the Ministry for- gotten the number of deer that are killed in the herding . grounds in a single night by wolves that kill for the sheer taste of blood? It has also been proven that a man's footstep will compact the snow more heavily than a snowmobile. It seems that only the bad 4 Dear Editor: The Toronto Star stated in a recent edition, that be- cause only 40 of the 3,000 Port Perry residents turned up at an information display (designed to indicate what is going to happen to Lilla St.) Lilla St. op position crumbled? the Durham Region Works Dept. officials feel that Lilla Street widening opposition has crumbled. Their reason- ing escapes me. What is apparent is that the 2,960 residents who didn't turn up at Show and Tell Male chauvenism | Dear Sir: FIREWOMEN! Male chauvanism is alive and well, and blooming in'Port Perry. Why shouldn't women have a chance to fight fires, if that is what they want? Surely, they have deter- mined to take whatever per- sonal risk there may be, when they decided to apply for the position of fire- person. They should have a chance to prove whether they can do the job, or not. All they are asking is the opportunity to do so. An option that is open to men at every job level. Men think that by keeping the "little woman' in the home, they are protecting her. Not so! How are we to learn, to grow, confined in solitary, so to speak? . What are the men afraid of? That in ten years, (or less) we may have a woman as fire chief? Women can even drive trucks. And big, shiny red fire engines! already know what the Region wants to do to Lilla St. Why go to such a meeting anymore to oppose? Opposi- tion has been expressed but ignored at previous meetings organized by the Region. I think it is insulting to Port Perry residents that the Regional Officials feel we have to be TOLD over and over again what their plans are. The Works Dept. say Lilla St. is a traffic bottleneck for drivers bound for the Kawartha Lakes. Do these experts have to be reminded that when it is a bottleneck in (continued on page 6) COMING SOON RADIO SHACK at House of Howard (continued on page 6) Sylvia Brown Welcome to Kelly's Corner... a new feature of The Star. Although I have been a contributing writer to The Star with guest editorials, nutrition and general interest articles for some time I have been asked by the ° new Publisher, Peter Hvidsten Jr. to write a column on .. a weekly basis. . We will attempt to bring a new look to the editorial section with news, views and interviews, on varied subjects of interest from all levels of government, science and anything we think you may find interest- ing. We promise no wars, killings, disasters, rapes, homicides or distressing news that fill the daily press. New products, new ideas and most important a guideline for good health. My background as a writer goes back many years. As Police Reporter for CKEY radio, I had the honour of writing news for Lorne Green, CKEY's major news- caster, with commercials by Port Perry's own Joel Aldred. From CKLB radio in Oshawa I went into the television business and later into publishing as the owner-editor of the Oshawa News (25,000 circulation) the forerunner to Oshawa This Week. I have had articles ip Durham Today magazine, Toronto Star, and the National Enquirer--the largest paper in North America (circ. 6 million), Oshawa This Week, Prevention magazine (1.5 million circ.) and last but no means least...The Star. Appearing on the Pierre Berton TV Show in the Dean Kelly Story an expose of price-fixing by the now defunct Clairtone Corporation and one of Canada's largest retailers. It was shown coast-to-coast on the CTV network, locally on channel 9. Harvey Kirck the national news anchor-man was cutting his teeth as a newsman at CKEY at the same time I was studying announcing and appearing on the Drama Workshop broadcasts...I mention the foregoing in part, as my credentials for what I hope to be a memorable relationship with the readers of the Star. We shall try to inject a little sanity and levity into a troublesome and insane world. Born and raised in a town even smaller than Port Perry...Fenelon Falls, I am sure I can relate with the problems of both urban and rural lifestyles.
