» / There are, | figure, an average of about three trees per every ten feet in the Kawartha backwoqds. So divide 5,280 by ten, multiply by three, and multiply again by the 100 miles | must have bounced around on the back of the snowmobile and you get a grand figure of 158,400 trees. \ 158,400 times...mostly by sheer instinct and reflexes tuned by wide-eyed terror, | evaded certain death that threatened to flatten this sportsman and his machine around the nearest pine tree. Like | said last week, I'm no snowmobile enthusiast, but why knock it when you haven't tried it. So | tried it. First of all, if you're the aesthete who wants to take a camera along to capture some of the moments of serenity, forget it. At least, don't dangle it around your neck. First, serenity at smoke-choked decibels isn't easy to come by, and secondly, the first bump you hit makes the camera dance around in front of your face. I almost put two teeth out with my Asahi Pentax. } The trail was being used by many other snowmobilers, and as they zoomed up a hill ahead, | realized this just wasn't for me. Practically straight up with trees, stumps, and rocks, it was covered with ice laid bare by the hundreds of machines that had gone before me. And trying unsuccessfully to find another route up the hill and with a dozen or so other machines piling up behind me, | made the attempt. | was quarter way up the first time when the machine started to slide backwards, with the driver feeling rather stupid. Lo "You gotta take a run at 'er,'"" somebody said, - one of the more patient in the line-up. Imagine standing on the bottom of 10 flights of stairs wearing a pair of skis. How do you get up? vrave Take a run at jt. A born follower, | tried it again and got about halfway up before starting the backward slide again. It wasn't the machine. others, tired of watching the clown with the camera, were wizzing past me with no problems at all. It was a matter of body english, i concluded, watching others practically doing handstands as they sped up.the hill at full speed, literally twisting the machine around in midair to elude the rocks, trees and ice. | made it on the fifth attempt, but | wished | hadn't. It was the same steep hill on the other side...downward. Wi like saucers, y heart pumping full It was sheer terror. mouth wide open and steam, | grabbed the brake for dear life, my feet braced stiffly against the front of the machine. Down, across, between trees, rocks, and under low-hanging branches, it was all a blurr. For the next 20 miles the ride resembled a roller coaster. Atop the machine, the ride wasn't unlike something I'd seen between the humps of Lawrence of Arabia--with the action sped up 10 . times. How a person's body can move in so many directions all at the same time is beyond comprehension. Although I'm still not an avid fan, the trip cleared uprthe theory of Snowmobiling as a lazy man's sport. You don't get cold snowmobiling, because after only a few miles of twisting trails, the inside of the snowmobile suit is like a blast furnace. Lastly, | discovered that eight years behind a typewriter does NOT keep you in shape. At least that's the dis- covery of some 44 motorists in 23 cars who became invol- ved in accidents at that location within two hours Sunday. The rash of accidents began at 11 a.m. when two vehicles collided in near- whiteout conditions. Three minutes later, that number had grown to 15 vehicles and a total damage approaching $8,000. Seven people were taken to Port Perry Memorial Com- munity Hospital with minor injuries. All were treated and released. Shortly before 1 p.m., a second accident at the same spot involved two cars, with damages of $3,000. Two people received injuries, and were treated and released from hospital. Five minutes later, a third car travelling that section of road collided with one of the parked cars, resulting in $1,300. damage. There was a delay of some 40 minutes, and then another two-car accident at the same location with damages of around $250. There was also an accident on Simcoe Street at 11:15 a.m. Sunday that resulted in almost $2,000 damage to cars driven by Morris Doherty, 40, of R.R.2, Port Perry, and Dan Lally, 25, of R.R. 2, Port 'Needs council's blessings It may not be exactly the approval in principal that developer N. Waller wanted for his proposed 244-acre estate residential sub- division, just north of Port Perry, but he was satisfied with council's indicated willingness to talk further on the project. Council had earlier moved that such an approval was. premature and that it would not be considered until the regional 'official plan is approved. But council appeared to come out in favour of the 135 lot development, and stated that council understands that the proposal is suitable for estate residential under the proposed official plan. "If and when accepted (the official plan)," states the resolution, 'council would be pleased to have Mr. Waller come before council again with the project." Mr. Waller said he needed Scugog Council's "bless- ings" in order to proceed with talks with Region departments. Perry.
