Fo LE FR SLAY, Ng SAVER by Dean J. Kelly x -- | & t N HYDRO RIP-OFF Hydro like Bell Telephone are both monopolies. You cannot generate your own electricity anymore than you can operate your own phone. When you deal with monopolies you are forced to deal with them on their terms 'not yours. They set the rules and you must obey. They set the rates and you must pay or be cut' off. You have no choice..you cannot get power from anyone else, no more than you can get your phone from another source..you are in fact locked into a system that has no competition. We have been told through the years that we have free enterprise. The Prime Minister says it isn't working and I agree. Big business and big unions are calling the shots, with you, the public caught in the squeeze. While rural hydro users have their power rates increased on February 1st, town users do not have their bills raised until March 1st, 1976. " Rural (high density and suburban locations) year round residences have up to now been billed on a sliding scale. A rate of 4.12c per KWH for the first 250 kwh then a drop to only 1.7¢c per kwh for the next 500 kwh. Anything over that you pay 1.55c. NOW with the new rates the billing for the first 750 kwh is 4.8¢c withNO 250 and 500 kwh reduced rate. YOU PAY THE WHOLE"AMOUNT at the higher rate..conservation does not pay - you do! - Lets take a bill (actual case) where a customer used 610 kwh in the billing period. This was billed previous . to the increase . purportedly at the old 1975 rate. Quick figuring shows the amount to be $16.45. The bill from Hydro was for $25.13 or $26.39 if not paid by due date. An overcharge of $8.68 or about 50 percent HIGHER THAN IT SHOULD BE. (Hydro says you must use a full 750 kwh in the billing period before qualifying for lesser rate) Conserve? Let us now compare the price of 750 kwh for high density and suburban locations, to Port Perry's new rates. 1975 Suburban 750 kwh $18.82 1976 (Sub.) 750 kwh $36.00 1976 Port Perry 750 kwh $16.50 (Suburban rates calculated on quarterly rates - Port Perry on monthly rates.) You will note that the 76 rate is almost DOUBLE that of '75 which was 10 percent higher than the "74 rate. Many people, particularily the elderly find it very difficult to figure their bills out. Hydro wanted 30 percent increase. In this case they have almost 100 percent. Energy Minister Timbrell said the increase would be 22 percent, and will continue to increase 22 percent every year...doubling the cost of hydro in the next four years. He has warned users of gas and oil not to switch to hydro...he's right. Ontario's prosperity has been closely related to its supply of low priced energy. The price of energy is reflectéd in almost everything you buy. Sir Adam Beck "Father of Ontario Hydro" said before his death "Remember what I'm telling you. "They have no cause to raise hydro rates. Watch what they do after I'm gone". Sir Adam would turn over in his grave if he saw hydro today in their multi-million dollar ivory tower. Hydro's expansion plans have been criticised as too grandiose and flagrantly expensive... in the tens of billions. The rate structure is geared to give the big user and often the waster of power the cheapest rates. The man who uses only 750 kwh...who conserves energy he pays 4.8¢c per kwh...the big user only 1.95c and down to 1.83c...about 250 percent less (after the initial 750 kwh). Governments have spent over '$1 million telling us to save energy...yet the rate structure remains backwards. . So alarmed by the continual increases I wrote the Energy Minister some months ago and received a four-page letter in return. The Minister was appalled by the increases asked for by Hydro and asked for cuts. $1,000,000,000 (billion) was cut from the budget but we are still paying through the nose. Check your bill and complain if you are not satisfied! ER Good News....Ontario's Health Minister says he is considering giving rebates to those who don't abuse the health plan, now costing $3 billion. ARRRAEERRRRAR NERS The National Enquirer in a front page story (Feb. 10, 1976) says that VITAMIN A CAN PREVENT CANCER -- AND CURE IT. The report is based on two top U.S. University reports and a Swiss Research Center. One American in three doesn't get enough Vitamin A, the story says. Among them will be a well-known mem- ber of the Federal Parlia- ment, a Deputy Minister from the Ontario Ministry of Culture and Recreation, the leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition in the Ontario legislature-and one of the North America's most famous classic contraltos. The chain of circum- stances that brings these beautiful country town by Lake Scugog stretches back over two years. To find its begin- nings, we must go back to 1973 and 74 when the town council was considering demolition of the old 1873 town hall. The demolition was estimated to cost about $3,000, and would have doubtless gone ahead were it not for the alarm that the move generated among a small group of people who cared about that curious notion '"heritage". They had seen other towns lose their beauty and their historic buildings -.quite unnecessar- ily - due to badly planned WINTERITE "progress", and they were determined that this process was not going to start in Port Perry. Drs. Price. and Hammett, made representations to the Town Council, and so did Mr. M. Mina, a professional actor living in Janetville. As a result, Council agreed not to demolish the building immediately but to lease it at a 'nominal fee to the concerned citizens. Artists, farmers, businessmen, school teachers, housewives, accountants and a publisher joined the group, and the long road to reconstruction had begun. As readers of this paper will know, the group set itself some very high stand- ards. Both structural and interior renovations would have to be of the first quality and would have to be appropriate to the original period in which the Town Hall was built. Such goals cost a great deal of money and demand the full-time attention of a very skilled contractor. Fortunately both these essential commodities were forthcoming. Local citizens poured donations, large and small into Town Hall 1873; Dale Procunier accepted the post of general contractor; and Dr. Matt. Dymond assisted the Directors of the newly incorporated. Town Hall 1873 in their approach to the Provincial Govern- ment. } Thé happy result of these efforts is now available for all to see. The old building at the corner of Queen and Lilla has had rotten bricks replaced with matching yellow bricks found else- where in town; weakened structural members ~ have been replaced with steel I- beams; a completely new suite of meeting rooms has been constructed downstairs FRED'S HOBBY SHOP 233 Queen Street - Port Perry - 985-8035 has added Craft Supplies to serve you better and the main hall has been repaired and beautifully decorated. But the Board of Town Hall 1873 did not want the building to stand merely as a sterile museum piece." Rather, they felt it should be a centre for community act- ivity as it had been in the past; and - beyond that - might well be the site of a performing arts festival that could grow to rival Niagara- on-the-Lake, and provide a significant increase to the flow of tourists into our region. In this way, the Board felt that they would succeed in serving the finan- (continued on page 14) VL NOW e INSULATION Not Blown 2.85 Bag Blowin *3.95 2" THICK STYRO FOAM INSULATION 4'x8' sheets 7%" THICK 1" THICK 1%" THICK ........ &3 winter Spread Provides excellent tire traction and winter walking safety!
