To aid them, Gordon L. MacKie, Ford of Canada's executive engineer, has com- piled the following tips on how best to use the safety system: ; +...Buckel up before' you turn the ignition key. With most cars, you'll thus avoid the irritation of the buzzer and warning light -- and you'll have the protection of the belt from the outset of .your trip.. Belts can be more com- fortable if you set them up properly. Most new-model cars have sliding "comfort" clips on the shoulder belt. Slide the clip against the belt housing or upper ring so the belt is loose enough to insert a fist between your chest and the belt. However, don't loosen it any more than that or you may reduce the system's effectiveness. Don't be surprised if the shoulder belt allows more freedom of movement than you have expected. In recent-model cars the belts are designed that way so you can reach the ashtray or instrument-panel controls, but will lock up automatic- ally to protect you under sudden-stop conditions. Most cars, built in the last three or four model years have the lap and shoulder belts permanently Joined, so that the whole system can be buckled in one ~ continuous motion, Until you become accustomed to this sweeping motion, you may not bring the belt over far enough toward the buckle the first time. In that case, let the lap belt fully retract so the "hold" mechanism is released and then start over again. Don't get upset if you accidentally jam the lap belt retractor by allowing the belt to retract while it's twisted. Most owner's manuals explains how to get it straightened out. To get comfortably into the rear seat in two-door models, fold the front seat forward in a smooth; uninterrupted motion and then pass below the belts. For those who have diffi- culty fastening seat belts because of their physical proportions (such as being short and stout)-or physical impairment, belt modifi- cations usually are available as an accessory at auto- mobile dealerships. Lake Scu- gog is a constant hive of "activity each weekend as snowmobilers haul their machines "to the lake 'to enjoy this recreation area. Prior to this season across Canada many snowmobilers were killed due to head injuries received from ac- cidents, but to date this year . not one' of the 12 fatalities that have occured can be "attributed to this. One of the main reasons for this, is due to a new law passed making the wearing of a helmet mandatory when operating a snowmobile on a country road or public trail. Before this law was pass- ed numerous accidents hap- pened similar to the one where a young woman and a young man driving separate machines collided. . The woman was thrown over her snowmobile and: her head struck the man's head. The - young woman was unhurt, because she was wearing a helmet; but the man, not wearing a helmet, was killed. . Twelve people have been killed to date this year as the result of snowmobiling accidents, this being about half the number killed last year and only a third of the number killed for the two years prior to 1975. Law or no law, it is com- mon sense to wear a helmet at all times. Greenbank UCW. The Evening Unit met in the Church basement on Wednesday, Feb. 11th. Fol- lowing a Hymn sing, Rev. ~ Mr. Roundell led a very interesting discussion on Family Life. He discussed the advantages and disad- vantages of rural life, and all agreed that we must continue to make the home the centre of our life. Mr. Roundell also mentioned that the United Church spon- sors several courses during the year and any delegate wishing to go can get finan- cial help from Presbytery. Helen Winslow thanked Mr. Roundell for coming to speak. The following took part in the Devotions: Helen McKean, Helen Winslow, Marg Couperthwaite and Norrine cook. After the offering was received, the Unit Leader, Helen McKean presided over the Business. The minutes were read by the Assistant Secretary, Brenda Gibson, and the Treasurer's Report was read by Velma Foster. Helen mentioned that our . membership fees are due and should be paid to the Treasurer. Helen then reported on the interesting Annual Meeting at Beaver- ton, and announced that the U.C.W. Rally will be May 20th at Valentia. It was moved that we sent $25.00 to a Minister in Rama who is helping a group of Indian children make projects. They needed money for lumber and wool. Mae Blakely thanked the U.C.W. for the turkey they received from the Evening Unit. Following the "Mizpah Benediction" and "Grace", a delicious lunch was served.
