Hospital Report Week Ending February 26th Admissions ..and does it well continued session meetings that ex- ceeds the attendance of the men. "Actually, the women are more reliable than the men. They rarily miss training sessions." There are other advant- ages, according to Tennant. The men are often at work or away, while women as a rule are home on a more regular basis. Particularly in day- time hours, women are more readily available; a clear advantage, according to Tennant. Chief Tennant admits there are limitations. Some jobs at the fire site will be allocated to the men, if possible, before the women. Breathing apparatus, for example, is avoided by the Cumberland volunteer be- cause she's experienced difficulty carrying it around. "So we don't ask her to wear it. She probably could if she had to, and I suppose with further training," she'd learn to adjust to it." But if there's limitations to women, there are to anyone on the department. "It's like - anything. You assign some people to do one particular job, and not others. The same goes here." And while she may not prefer to do the particular job that demands she wears the breathing apparatus, she can do other jobs effectively. Chief Tennant said he didn't take on a department of huge, muscular men. '""She's in as good a shape, if not better, than some of the men." , os She 'doesn't drive any of the equipment....yet. "I can- not see any reason why she should not allowed to drive or one any of the quipment if ahd when she qualifies. And noting her obvious enthusiasm and dependabil- ity, Chief Tennant in no way rules out promotion within the department, to perhaps a volunteer' captain or other positions in the department. The addition to the depart- ment hasn't seemed to bother the men at' all, according to the chief. "I don't think it's created any problems. I don't know of any, anyhow. And there wasn't any at the time we hired her. She qualified, and she was accepted. It was as simple as that. ) Confronted with a major- ity resignation as was threat- ened here by the majority of Caesarea department fire- fighters if women were hired Chief Tennant said he would have to "'take a second look" at hiring a woman. looks here for ideas continued He said that there are no facilities in Barrie for the growing number of people involved in the arts, and that such a facility is very much needed. Cost of the renovations are expected to be much greater than Old Town Hall 1873. About a half million dollars, according to the visiting official. ) Compare Borrowing Costs.
