re I bm lI or oe, rrr eo _,. By Darrin Jobb The Big Red Machine after winning the Lakeshore championship over Ux- bridge moved on into the quarter finals of the All- Ontario. Their opponents were Bancroft, the winners of the east division, The first game, last Wednesday "the 18th, seemed to be a testing game. Since. these clubs had never played before they tried to find the other clubs weaknesses and strong points. Port obvious- ly found out quicker as they defeated Bancroft, 2-1. Ray Gibson deserves a great deal of the credit as he kicked out all but one of Bancrofts shots. Bancroft scored first at 10:15 while Port was shorthanded. * The Big Red "Machine came storming back in the second period to score two unans- wered goals by Chas. Brown and Mike Tobin. George Burnett - assisted on both goals. Mark Cleveland also picked up an assist. The team seemed to be plagued with injuries as Hal Storry, a defenseman, was out both games with pinched nerves, also a defenseman, received a high stick in the face, which took several stitches to' close the wound. John was able to play in -the second game by wearing a protective cage over his' face. As well as Hal Storry, Wilt Fellows was also unable to play because: of personal matters. With only two lines, and an extra man, Port travelled 120 miles to Bancroft. This turned out to be a hard hitting performance by both clubs. The first two periods were slow for Port as they were outscored 3-2. Bancroft again scored the first goal, but it took only 11 seconds for George Burnett to tie up the game, Chas. Brown and Bill Owen assist- ed on the goal. Bancroft then scored two uhanswered goals as the teams took to their dressing rooms. Coach Russ Stevens and assistant coach Jim Burnett then inspired Port to get moving. Port came out flying as they outscored Bancroft, 4-1, in the third period. Port got two quick goals less than a minute apart early in the third to jump out in front. George Burnett got his second of the night from the slot when he was set up by Bill Owen and John Robert- son. Then Billy Owen let a booming slapshot go 50 feet from the net. Dennis Frans- sen picked up an assist on that goal. With 2:20 left in the game, Bancroft scored to tie up the game, 4-4. The crowd went wild after this goal and it looked as if this momentum might inspire Bancroft to score-. yet another goal. Coach Russ Stevens put out the line: of Cleveland, Canning and Jobb in order to apply pressure at Bancroft. He was not disappointed as Mark Cleveland scdred, as- sisted by Darrin Jobb with one minute left to play. Mark Cleveland scored again in an empty net assist- ed by George Burnett and Dave Canning. This was the best period the Bantams have played all year. Bill Owen played an outstanding game and was . no doubt the best man on the ice. Tim Parker also must receive a great deal of the: credit as he helped get the team moving all through the game. The next game is aera J | 95 S Reg. "10 62s sq. yd.
