Port Perry Midget Softball players and coaches received their new jackets at a banquet held at Port Tavern on Sunday night. Above left, team captains Robert Evans and Mike Healey admire one of the new \_/ . jackets while OASA President Vin Walker and three of the sponsors, Wayne DeJong, Maurice Baker and Bob Simms look on. The Midget team won the All Ontario Championship last season. Wheels keep on rolling Ready for semifinals against Mitchell By Andrea Jones . As the boys came off the ice in Schomberg after their loss last Sunday, Bill Haynes said, "Well, it looks like we'll be back in Schom- berg next Saturday." It was just that attitude, that desire, by every mem- ber of the Toyota Wheels that produced the super win at home, 9-2, and forced the series to a fifth game in. Schomberg. In the fourth game, the Wheels were behind: in games 2-1 but that only made them try even harder. They took the play to Schomberg in every period and they outshot the visitors TT Thanks from the Midget Softball Team H H E The Port Perry Midget Softball Club, in £ deepest appreciation, would like to take time out £ to say thanks to Bob Thomson, Hank DeJong, £ Maurice Baker and Emiel KroonenBerg for £ having a well sponsored team; Vin Walker for g taking time out from his busy schedule to be i our guest speaker; the Management of the Port g Tavern for serving a wonderful meal and last but not least, the Chamber of Commerce for the $50 donation to help pay for part of the Team's meal. EB Er g = E The Midget Team Saying Thanks for Everything ETC RT in every period but one, (which was tied). The Wheels first goal was the result of some second effort on the part of Robert Evans who set up Bill Bridges. - Steve Jones waited for his ,mates to get onside and from outside the blue line, he slammed a shot past the Schomberg goalie to put Port Perry in the lead 2-0. Period two opened with a goal for Schomberg as a result of a (temporary) let down by a couple of Wheels, but Evans, who was playing with a touch of the flu, did some fancy dipping and div- ing and neatly tucked it into | the top corner. That play was followed by another Evans tally from Mike Mc Quade and Colin Wackett. The new combination of Healey, Griener and Haynes was a good move and they collected four of the nine goals. Griener had two goals and two assists, Bill Haynes scored one goal and three assists and Mike Healey did a super job on his new wing adding a goal and an assist. Phil Cochrane surprised Schomberg at the 8 second mark of the second period as he bounced one in off the goalies shoulder, right from the face-off. The defense played super hockey and kept the puck in the opposition zone all night. Terry Flieler handed out some stiff checks just to let Schomberg know where he was, and he collected two assists for his efforts. Colin Wackett was also a valuable addition to the squad and more than any other game, this was a full team effort. Even Merle Schewaga was a winner! Sunday's game was do or die for both teams but the Wheels had an edge because they had fought hard in the last five periods of hockey, whereas Schomberg seemed to be relying on the luck that won them their two games. The Toyota boys traded 1 rushes and buckled down in earnest after Schomberg opened the scoring on a power play. Stu Cochrane threaded the needle to notch Port Perry's first goal with the assists going to Colin Wackett who kept the puck in the right zone, and Mike McQuade who made a lovely pass out in front. The second period was only 21 seconds old when Mark Lee won the face-off in the Schomberg end and dropped the puck back to Steve Jones who sifted it through a maize of players sending Port into the lead. Jones worked hard on the Wheels third goal. He just stepped out of the penalty box and tipped the puck into the corner. Phil Cochrane joined him in the corner and came up with the puck, let a shot go and Jones was wait- ing on the opposite side to slap in the rebound. Every line was checking and making Schomberg's rushes ineffective. = Mike Healey threw the check of the game as he took advant- age of the short boards to lift one of the Schomberg players right into the stands. Billy Bridge made a screen shot count to end the period with Hintze and Wac- kett drawing assists. | In the third period, (continued on page 20) PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Mar.
