ry RC rN ens -- ¥ ial : 20-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Mar. 17, 1976 The annual George Stone Open Bonspiel was held this weekend and curlers from as far away as Toronto and Oshawa participated. The winning team were presented with the trophy by Mr. and Mrs. George Stone. From left are: Mrs. Ruth Stone, Bob Matthews of Oshawa, Don Hadden of Sunderland, and George Stone. (Front) Ron Blakely of Toronto and Richard Black of Oshawa. All members of the team are brothers-in-law, and play together every year for the bonspiel. Ready for semifinals (continued Schomberg capitalized on a Port Perry error and came in with a three on one situat- ion, but the Wheels: came right back and Wackett fed the puck to Griener who in turn gave it to Healey in the clear. Healey pulled the goalie neatly to make the score a comfortable 5-2. Griener was the key to the Wheels final goal as he broke out of the centre zone and into the Schomberg end. Just as Rob could feel the hot breath of the Schomberg players on his neck, he slip- ped it over to Evans who was trailing behind and Evans tucked it home. Even the referee was heard to mention that Dur- ward made a "save-and-a- half", one of the many crucial ones that Charlie made all through the game. It's an added bonus knowing that Schewaga is just as Keeping it in the family, they claim. ready at any time. The win put Port Perry into the semi-finals against. Mitchell and it was a victory that was earned through desire and tough, up-hill work. Something that Port Perry never needed to do all year was come from behind but they proved they were a team with courage and control, and credit must also be handed to the loyal fans who followed the Wheels in all kinds of weather to cheer and chant and support the boys in every way. ' The fans on Saturday made the Schomberg arena sound like a part of Port Perry. A big asset! Wheels met Mitchell on Tuesday, March 16 at 9:00 p.m. in Mitchell for game one and return home for the second game on Friday, March 19 at 9:00 p.m. Better arrive early for this one! - 'News from the Bowling Lanes LADIES MONDAY NIGHT BOWLING Standings: Snowmobiles Candles..........ccccvvevvinnnns Dandy Lions Lumber Jacks....
