28-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Mar. 17, 1976 Scugog Island and area news By Mrs. Earl Reader On Wednesday evening, at the home of Mrs. Marilyn Tripp, 13 ladies, including . Marilyn's sister Bev., met for the "Head" UCW. After the usual opening Devotions, we were inform- ed that the theme was "Fault Finding", thereupon Lenore Blueman conducted a suit- "able study. This was follow- ed by an.impressive skit of illustration by Bonnie Gerrow, Irene Carter and Myrtle Manns. It was entitl- ed, "After the first meeting in the club room or home" and presented the truths with some wit. During roll call we told what March means to us. For some it recalls annivers- aries, storms or special events. For other it is a harbinger of Spring. - There was a card of appre- ciation from Mr. and Mrs. Sam Arnold. "The Hospital Auxialiary sent thanks for supporting their appeals. A letter from Mrs. NOW IS THE TIME TO ORDER'YOUR Red- path drew special attention to our obligations M & S. As the special committee that was appointed several years .ago, has dwindled to one member, it was suggested that Beryl Pearce, Betty Reader and Irene Carter work with new members from "Grace' UCW. April 7 we hope to pack a bale. so gather up your non- es8entials. The March forfeit calendars are being followed carefully. Many used stamps were turned in. Think about your special items. for the Art and Crafts Show in April. Please let us know if you know where items of interest can be found. Marilyn Tripp conducted a "Sunny" contest. Attendance at "Grace" Church on Sunday reached a high for 1976. Rev. Pogue's story for the children roused their attention by an intro- duction of soldiers marching off the map. In many fields we go as far as we can without having a future guide to let us know what will happen next. Jesus really did this when he insisted that he would die but would rise again. Our hopes and wishes go out to those who are still struggling to find the road to good health, On Saturday evening friends were entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Platt with music per- formed by Mr. Platt on the steel guitar, Mrs. Platt on drums and Mr. Carl Nevers on accordian. Also Mr, Nevers enjoyed a lovely supper with Mr. and Mrs. Platt. If your arena convasser hasn't called yet, you may still look forward to it. Please be prepared to hear the facts and what has and is being done. 4-H Club Many or our Island girls, including Carol Wood our president, expressed the opinion that there was a 'knead'in having this 4-H unit. Mrs. Reta Wilsorf*rose to! the occasion by opening her kitchen to us. With the help of our assistant leader, Mrs. Prentice, the Scugog Island Bread Baskets are holding - their meetings at her home each Wednesday afternoon. Very few of the eight girls attending 'doughn't' have ex~ perience at baking bread, so we are battering our ability with the breads we have created. Some of our more floury-girls have attempted fancy rolls and buns. In thie yeast or inthe west, we agree that this has been the most tasteful unit yet. Tammy Freeman Secretary Hospital Association approves hospital austerity measures The Board of Directors of the Ontario Hospital Associ- ation, meeting in Toronto recently, approved the following statement regardi- ing hospital austerity measures being undertaken by Provincial Health Minis- ter Frank Miller: . "The Ontario Hospital Association accepts the need for severe constraints in government spending. We recognize that government is accountable for management of the pro- vince's economy and for determining financial prior- ities. . Every- thing possible should be done to minimize and cushion the social and economic impact upon af- fected communities and staff. The association will work towards that end. Hospital closures obvious- ly represent a radical and distressing measure for the communities affected. Such a.measure, however, might be justified in some cases, particularly if the altern- ative is a general lowering of health services in the larger surrounding com- The Association believes that each constraint proposed by the Ministry of Health has to be judged separately. Accordingly it is prepared to assist individ- ual hospitals. in evaluating their position and in making representation to the government, where Ministry action appears unwar- ranted. Where individual hospital closures are confirmed, the Association considers the Ministry's stated target date, of April 1 is unrealistic. We believe the Minister should declare his willing- ness to negotiate reasonable time-tables for the winding down of hospital services and the provision of altern- ative health care services to people in the immediate community. Ideally, such discussions should include direct involvement of other health facilities in the areas affected. \ "man Richard Drew. The Port Perry Snowmobile Club hosted a teen dance recently in an effort to raise money for the Scugog Community Arena fund. Proceeds of the event were handed over to the new arena committee- It makes it a special honour to accept this money, said Mr. Drew, since the club came forward on its own. The club was not approached-for a donation by the campaign. .From left are, club president Bill Harper, Mr. Drew, and Ellen Buller and Debbie Drinkwalter.
