oO EN © le Be ¢. §® r » } 2 RY Of Facts and Fantasy By Reta M. Berrill IT'STALMOST A RODENTS WORLD According to the packers of bird-seed and the speed . with which if disappears from the supermarket : - shelves we know that we share our hobby with a great Hae es ox ER RA 2a many people. And could easily believe that they share our greatest frustration of the process...the squirrels. During our early years of feeding the birds our | home was isolated; surrounded by orchards, farm- fields, trees and rail fences. This, we 'considered, a natural playground for small animals, Yet, we seldom saw a squirrel, and then were delighted as someone was sure to shout "Look, there's a squirrel!" But it's different now and this has given us much Bread for "Thought. Sh Did they snitch"a leaflet from some human's book and decide to cash-in on easy living? Could we be their stand-in for Mother Nature whom they're told owes them this? We've tried everything we could think of as a deterrent...and have concocted some wierdies, but have always been outsmarted. ; They're cunning, cautious, saucy and bold; and oh, so agile. And we'd swear they can think. We can also [imagine that he's using the most colorful adjectives of squirrel language too; after being chased for perhaps the umpteenth time in half-an-hour. Also, his hearing is, enviable as well as his speed, and only the sound of the -outer door will induce him to scram. ,, Almost gleefully we welcomed the first snowstorm of winter, as usually, cold or rough weather will keep em close to their own firesides; where, we've visions of a larder-laden with goodies, and undoubted- ly, boldly labeled *Easy Pickin's'*. But we'd scarcely had time to wipe the smile from our face when there he was, windblown, greedy and grinning, sneaking breakfast from the tiny chickadees. In reference we say 'him' though we know there's some 'hers' too, to account for the ever increasing number of progeny. There's gray ones and black ones; bushy-tailed, skinny or fat. And although no more than a couple or three appear at one time we strongly suspect that they operate in relays; eating as much as possible then toting away as much as possible for stock-piling. Meanwhile, it's been suggested that we forget the birds and encourage thé squirrels instead. But what, we ask, would they give us, in return? Would they act as vigilantes...ever alert to all those creepy and - 'crawly enemies of plant-life... "debuggers" of the garden? Or, sound a melodious reveille at sunrise: Would they next in our trees, then bring their young to play on the lawn and bathe in the bird-bath; without expecting another handout until September? - Here, we're skeptical, regarding him as a pompous little upstart with am over-inflated ego, who, after his few show-off tricks, would surley be very boring. In fact, though we're not a promoter of cruelty to animals, dumb or otherwise, there's times when we wouldn't be at all unhappy to see him hanging limply around some dowager's neck. We're not an instigator of warfare either, but can often wish that the birds would be a little more aggressive. Enmasse, they could literally make the 'fur fly' and reign supréfe in their chosen territory. However, we've a word of warning here. Don't ever underestimate the intelligence of this furry little guy. He's amply endowed with gray matter. Or, if someone suggests that your ideas are squirrelly, don't panic. That may be a bonafide compliment and one of' the biggest you'll ever receive. But right now...does anyone have a thinkin'-cap to spare? Ours has just about had it. he Ce Wh SR 2 / .
