Practically all accid- _ental immersions are caused by a momentary bit of care- lessness. No one is inclined to think of drowning as the ending to a fishing weekend 'but there is a possibility this - may happen if you are suddenly thrown into cold water at this time of year. Hypothermia is the rapid physical and mental collapse Various reactions to drug The aspirin that relieves one person's cold symptoms 'may help spread the infect- ion to others. Tests conducted by resear- chers showed some surpris- ing results, Even the invest- igators were astounded. When a person who already has a cold takes aspirin, the amount of viruses in their nasal secretions actually increases. People catch colds by inhaling the droplets expell- ed by cold-sufferers who do not cover their nose and mouth when they sneeze or .cough. If they also take -aspirin, they may be even more of a menace. The research on the sub- ject was done by infecting healthy 'medical students with two rhinoviruses, two of the hundreds of viruses that cause tife common cold. For eight days, some of the volunteers received aspirin to treat the infection, while others received a dummy pill. The results showed that those receiving aspirin had a moderate reduction 'in the ' frequency and severity of symptons. They were able to stay out of bed longer than the other: group. But they also showed higher amounts of viruses in secretions from "their noses. _ Why this should be, baffles the researchers, who pub- 'lished ' their results in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. They suggest that aspirin somehow inter- feres with the body's defense system against viruses. But more research will have to explore the reasons how and why. - 3 : What's in the air Wwe accompanying the sudden chilling of the body's inner core. In water that is 10 deg. C (50 deg.
