On speak- ing about influenza, the doc- tor said that every study conducted since the first tepdeted death from swine flue last year indicates this strain of influenza may reach the same proportions . as the 1918-19 outbreak that killed over 20 million people. The speaker said that influ- énza epidemics seem to run in 10-year cycles, referring to the 1957-58 Asian flu and the 1968-69 Hong Kong Flu. Unfortunately, the next one expected will be the swine flu variety. Dr. Blandford was con- cerned that not enough money is being budgeted for medical research and, because of government policy, Canada is in danger of losing her medical resear- chers. The government believes that wg can get all Sea Queen Swimsuits our research from the United States. This belief is self- defeating, because many of our young doctors and scien- tists are leaving the country. The speaker stated the Canadian government has made no effort.on the scale of the American government to produce the flu vaccine, and is shopping around in Europe and the United States hoping to purchase enough vaccine for our needs. '"This again is another reason for more government financing,' said Dr. Blandford. ; Greetings were brought to the annual meeting by Mr. Walter Beath, Chairman of the Municipality of the Region of Durham, and Mayor James Potticary of Oshawa.
