News of interest from ne . effort, June has been a busy month in the Athletic area of School life. Canada Fitness Tests - The grades 5-6 class took part in these tests sponsored by the Dept. of Health and Welfare. Students were successful in achieving 4 Bronze, 8 Silver and 15 Gold badges. Congra- tulations to Stacey Brown on winning the Award of Excel- lence badge. Boys Baseball - On June 16, the school team competed in the Goodwood Tourn- ament. Although they lost both games played, our boys displayed good sportsman- ship and were a credit to our school. Girls Baseball - On June 22, the school team competed in the Uxbridge Tourn- ament. The girls reached the semi-final by beating R. H. Cornish. Despite a good Uxbridge emerged the winners. Epsom Play Day - June 24 was the day the students from Grades 1-6 took part in Play Day events at school. Ribbons were presented to the first, second and third winners for boys and girls in each grade. Boys Grade 1: 1st - N, Gourlie; 2nd - M. Kendall; 3rd - M. Evans. Girls Grade 1: 1st - S. Slack; 2nd - A. Goslin; 3rd - C. Reynolds. Boys Grade 2: 1st - L. Wilbur; 2nd - D. Scala; 3rd - S. Langille, Girls Grade 2: 1st - J. Evans; 2nd - N. Rudkin. Boys Grade 3: 1st - B. Spears; 2nd - Rumford; 3rd - T. Elson. Congratulations to all our winners. At the County Level on June 3, our students com- peted in the D.E.T.A. Track meet at Port Perry High School. Paul Donnelly took third in Boys, 10-year-old - Shotput. Sandra Bolton took second in the Girls 11-yr-old, 200 meter race. Patsy Spears took 3rd in the 12-yr- old Shotput, Pattie Kendry took fifth in the girls 11-yr- old Shotput, Lorrie Spears took first in the girls 10-year- old Shotput. On Saturday, June 12, Sandra Bolton 'and Lorrie Spears advanced to the finals at Civic Fields in Oshawa. Sandra failed to qualify, she tried her best and was a credit to her school. Lorrie was success- ful in capturing fifth place in Shotput for Durham Region. Congratulations - girls for representing our school so well, : Awards day - Special guests were former Trustees of Reach S.S. No. 11 and former teachers of Epsom School. As well as our Athletic Awards, Mrs. Jeffery presented the Epsom Community plaque for General Proficiency to Sandra Bolton. The Bethesda-Reach W.1. Plaque YT BRON ASRS NR eA L or N \ for Englist to Tracy Elson. Each plaque was accom- panied by a personal gift. Trophies from Port Perry Kinsmen Club were present- ed by Mr. Smart to the winners in the Heritage Day Contest. Junior Essay to Tracy Elson, Junior Poster to Stacy Brown, 1st Primary Poster to Lee Wilbur, 2nd Primary Poster to Heidi Spannbauer. Cash awards were 'presented to Stacy Brown, Chris Brown and Scott Wilbur for their win- nings in' the Farm Safety Poster Competition for Reach Township. Mrs. Hilda Bailey present- ed Mrs. Armstrong with an engraved plaque for her many years service to Epsom School. The former teachers and trustees received Epsom United Church and Epsom School S.S. 11 Reach 1876-1976 Centennial booklet. Two former trustees present were Mr. H. Ashton, and Mr. LW Prentice, both are in their ighties. The staff congratulates all the students and wish them a safe and enjoyable summer. The W.I. enjoyed their annual outing June 23 when 18 ladies went to Oshawa to tour the beautiful Parkwood, former home of Mr. and Mrs. S. McLaughlin. Then enjoy- ed a tour of the gardens and tea in the tea house by the beautiful pond. Everyone in the Epson and Bethesda Community is invited to the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Boadway, July 11 for the W.I. Annual Com- munity Picnic. This is served buffet style at 11:30 - 12:30 sharp. Bring your cutlery and picnic basket and a lawn chair, The District Institute Pie- nic will be, held at Elgin. Picnic lunch. Bring your own place setting and drink. ~ Time 12:30, July 13. July 4, Church will be at Utica at 11:30 with Mike Ward in charge. We are still planning a Strawberry Social at the Church for July 10. We expect to have a programme of skits and music by local talent. Come and enjoy yourself. Chosen one of 30 students in Ontario to partic- ipate in a Nature of Mater- ials course. We are proud that she had this rare and exciting opportunity. Her school is proud of her and I'll bet her parents are too. Miss Donna Kerry is vacationing with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Stearman and Christopher in London, Ontario this week. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Benns and family, Mr. and Mrs. Don Card and Jeffrey, Mr. Rob Card and Mr. Jack Monsma_ visited Mr. and Mrs. A. Card on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Asling were overnight guests with Dr. Jerrold, Mrs. Asling - and girls of Hanover. On returning home, they brought granddaughter Jan with them for a holiday.
