A CANADIAN PUBLIC COMPANY WHOSE ONLY BUSINESS IS HELPING PEOPLE. Scugog Island and area news by Mrs. Earl Reader Last Wed. was a busy day for many Island people. Mrs. Doug Crozier and Mrs. Alan Carter enjoyed the bus '\rip to Niagara-on-the-Lake to attend the Shaw Festival. The "Grace" and "Head" U.C.W.'s provided a Straw- berry supper for nearly 200 people. On Sat. the **Head' U.C.W. ladies sold refreshments at the large Smith sale on Con. "6. We welcome Mr. Murray McLaren back from the hospital after another successful cataract operation. On Sat. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Samells drove their daugh- . ter Linda and Tammie Veltri to Camp Quinmo-Lac near Madoc, where they will remain for a week. On the way home, they visited at the cottage of Mr. and Mrs. John Osaduke. It does seem as if we can get too much of a good thing. While some people pray for a little rain, we sympathize with the farmers and others who depend on some dry, bright weather for their living. On Sun. Rev. Pogue pre- sented as usual, a well studied sermon. But only a small number attended to enjoy it. We have only one more, Sun. to appreciate his fine work, namely the last Sun. of July. Mrs. Cawker had adorned the Communion table with a beautiful arrangement of hydranea and three colourful roses. In place of a childrens story, Mr. Pogue drew our attention to a present need in Vancouver and our nearby Oshawa where the number of men without work and FL OE ? friends is increasing. These people turn to the churches for assistance. The men's hostel does a great job but cannot do it alone. The main part of the ser- mon was a study of religion. Of all the creatures on earth, man alone has a religion. Human beings are motivated by their needs, physical, emotional and intellectual. Religion is connected with each. Mrs. Sandra Boos and her . family from Vancouver is visiting at the parental-home of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Fralick. Congratulations to Janet Reader who brought honour to our Island by her scholastic achievements. Now she will be looking forward to attending univer- sity, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ford- er have returned from a trip to the Calgary Stampede. The Women's Institute will meet at the Island Hall, Wed. evening July 21. For the roll call, please bring your oldest school reader. The meeting will take the form of a social evening. . After months of work, the Tweedsmuir His- tory book will finally be on display. On Sat. July 17, the Women's Institute conducts its third annual auction sale at the former Centre School The first two sales were very interesting and successful. Many donations have al- ready been picked up and the ladies will be pleased to receive more. If you have large or heavy items please phone Mrs. Helen Fedyk or anyone on the executive. There will be pony rides for the children. After months of reno- vations and changes we are pleased to hear that Mr. Joel Aldred has again opened the Centre Store. - Among the capable helpers who will be there to serve the public are Mrs. Medway Welch, Cheryl Chandler and Lisa Galante who formerly lived on Scugog. We wish them every success. For many years this store has been a land- mark and given handy and friendly service under the direction of many owners whom many of us may recall.
