The local club is currently fighting. to keep their play-off chances "alive" as they trail the fourth place Foley Plumbing team by two points and the third place Markham Aces by four points. Lumbermen-3 Whitby-1 The Lumbermen went in last Thursday nights game at the local park realizing that a win would help close the eight point lead the Whitby club currently in second place in the league held over them. Laurie Williams went to the mound for the local team and responded with a six hit, 17 strike-out performance, his best "outing'" of the season. The big hitter for the Lumbermen was Bill St.John who had a double in the sixth inning and drove in two runs; that proved to be the winning margin in the game. Other hits went to Brent Heard, Ken Davidson and Bill Wannamaker who had a triple to deep left-centre field. Brent Heard tripled in the fourth inning to make the score 3-2, but the visitors made it 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning Laurie Williams and Brent Heard singled and scored on Ken Davidsons third hit of the game, to even the score at 4-4 and set the stage for an exciting game winning rally. Ken Goreski pitched the win for the 'Lumbermen" and scattered eight hits and had three strike-outs, while John Starkey was the loosing pitcher giving up twelve hits. This marked the first win for the local team over Foley's in two seasons of play. The next home game for the Lumbermen will be on July 15 at 8:15 p.m. when the Oshawa Motor Carriers will be the visitors. Lumbermen i improve league standing with 2 wins Ontario Summer Games Midget Tournament The -Ontario Summer Games Midget Tournament will be held in Port Perry this weekend, July 16, 17, 18. This tournament is being held to choose a team to represent the central region of Ontario in the Summer Games to be held in Ottawa on Labour Day weekend. Nine teams will take part starting Friday night and ending Sunday - North York, Willowdale, Richmond Hill, Stouffville, Peterborough, Scarborough, Lindsay, Oshawa and the local Port Perry Merchants. Friday night at 9 p.m. North York Amesbury will play Willowdale North- here July 16, 17, 18 tournament.. 'The tourna- ment is a double knock-out which means a team can lose one game but if they lose a second game they are out. All games are seven innings with any ties to be broken. Two lakefront diamonds will . be used. The winning team shall. receive a gold medallion, the 'runner-up a silver.
