They are the students of Mrs. Gertrude Jackson A. T.C.M. RM.T. Grade three harmony; honours - Julie R. Brierley. Grade two Rudiments, pass - Anne Marie Taylor. Grade one Rudiments; first class honors - K. Janet Cope. Craft demonstrations con- tinue at Scugog Shores Museum this Sunday with rug hooking being; demon- strated by Mrs. Phyllis Ham- ilton and Miss Marjory Williams. Examples of their work will also be on display. Mr. and Mrs. Len Clark and Mr. and Mrs. Storey Beare have just returned from the World's Inter- national Lions Club Conven- tion in Hawaii. In addition to taking part in the conven- tion, they enjoyed vacation- ing on Waikiki and Maui. A benefit dance for Keith and Faye Ashton is being held this Friday at Utica Hall. The Ashton's barn was burned to the ground last month and friends and neigh- bours are doing everything possible to help the popular couple. Tickets are only $5.00 a couple and the proceeds are going to help rebuild the Ashton's barn. Don't miss the Lions Club first annual Lions-Fest, heing held this Friday and Saturday at the Port Perry arena. The two'day event will feature OOM-PAH bands, sing-songs, dancing, refreshments and food. On allegations that the hiring policies for part-time fire fighters is discrimin- atory towards women, the report states that the Town- ship By-law refers to 'Any qualified person" assuming that sex discrimination does not exist in the hiring policy. However, when the By-law is further examined, the words 'person' or "member" are not used by the words "he" or "his" are used, leading to the assumption that only males are used, leading to the assumption that only males are members of the ROD Fire Department. The office of the Fire Marshal has been invited to comment on these matters, states the report. "It is not our 'intent to enter into a local contro- versy dealing with alleged discrimination. We would rather examine the qualifi- cations for appointment of members of the Fire Depart- ment in view of obtaining the most qualified people," the report continues. "We doubt that a woman might be any less capable than a man in passing the qualifications and aptitude: tests, medical fitness and probation period as prescrib- ed in the Establishing and Regulating by-law. At any given time, any candidates could be compared and show favourable. Even a single candidate of either sex might show more favourable at any given time as opposed to another time when tested. These are short term tests while the training and quality of service offered by Fire Fighters must be con- sidered as long term functions. Best of luck Rick. ACLD Meeting A meeting of the Dur- ham North A.C.L.D. was held Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. at St. John's School in Uxbridge. Mrs. Linda' Calder from St. Joseph's Separate School, set up two mornings of evaluation for the children of our members with learning disasbilities. All our our members have been notified by telephone as the. mornings-gre next Mon- day and Tuesday, July 12th and 13th, at 9:30 a.m., and your paper does not come out until-later in the week. Activities will be available for the children in the gym- nasium at St. John's, and a summer program will be set up, hopefully two mornings a week all. summer long.
