Nestleton Jets win CTC softball tournament For the first time since its inception, the Malmont Farms Nestleton Jets com- peted in the annual Cana- dian Tire Softball Tourn- ament. They went undefeat- ed through the entire tourn- ament and clinched the championship with a 7-5 de- cision over a Ballard Lum- ber ladden Utica team. It had been the second time that these two teams had met through the tournament with the same result. In the first game Malmont Farms met the Port Perry Midgets, who had Laurie Williams on the mound. The game was played under wet conditions and this seemed * to hamper the Ballard Lum- ber pitcher. The Malmont Farms slimly beat the Mid- gets 3-2 and from there breezed to the champion- . ships. The team then played the Lindsay Juveniles and won a 5-4 decision. Danny Ellicott had seen the Malmont Farms team as they played off in the O.A.S.A. play- downs last year with the same result; a win for the Malmont Farms. AUGUST 5th - 9 to 6 Malmont Farms started strong in the next game as they pounded Utica's pit- cher, Eric Mortimer, for nine runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the team 12-2 in five innings. This win put Malmont Farms in a' position that if they won their next game they would advance to the finals. And advance. they did as they destroyed Cana- dian Tire in their next game by the score of 10-1, even though Canadian Tire had picked-up a Ballard Lumber pitcher. Randy MacLeod started all the games for the Mal- mont. Farms and needed only six innings of relief help from Rick Campbell throughout the entire tourn- ament. The real story as far as their success goes, is that no team could hold the Mal- mont Farms batters as they riddled opposition teams for 37 runs in 33 innings of ball, and contained the other teams to only 15 runs. It's not to be said that Malmont Farms had an easy run to the finals as each of the teams they defeated went on to take the top five positions and win prize money. Utica 2nd; Port Perry Midgets 3rd; Canadian Tire 4th; and the Lindsay Juveniles 5th; out of the 16 teams that were in the tournament. This was an Int. "C" open tournament . meaning that any team could use any player that was not signed higher than Int. "C". Al- most the entire Ballard Lumber team played for some team at some time through the tournament. Only two teams didn't pick up players for the tourn- ament, Swamp Garage of Scugog Island and the Mal- mont Farms Nestleton Jets. All in all, the weekend tournament was a success and Mr. Doug Scott, the tournament organizer, is hoping for a bjgger and better tournament next year. When people remem- ber that baseball is only a game, the fun will still be there. The dates are tentative only due to diamond avail- ability.
