In the emerging tradition of the second "Superstar" contest, the Scugog mayor discarded the tradition re- serve of his office and pitch- ed eggs, spat watermelon seeds, ignored pie-in-the- face and generally ramrodd- ed a successful effort to retain his Superstar title. Not that the competition wasn't keen, either. Valiant efforts were made by others, such as Bob "Sup- erspit" Brinkman who, after a neck-bending, lip-pucker- ing windup, sent a water- melon seed sailing out of the court and into the cheering crowd. Chamber of Commerce President, Richard Drew, seemed not in shape for the competition. Drew's carbon- copy windup of Brinkman's looked promising, . but the seed sputtered to a halt almost at Drew's fee Pizza-making proved an- other success, and dignitar- 3 pio : Superstar champ, Mayor Lawrence Malcolm with trophy is flanked here by runners-up, Bob Brinkman, left, and Jerry Taylor. ies spun their stretched-out pizzas into the air. The pliant pastry was easier flung than caught, however, and pizzas struck partici- pant, and pavement. Having the most fun as . dignitaries shed their dignity was Howard "Loudmouth" Hall, who's prodding, jeer- ing, and gleeful puns earned him proper retaliation. First inkling of what was to come--a carefully-aimed blob of pizza dough--was easily deflected by Hall. But after the last event--an at- tempt by contestants to find jelly beans in a plate full of whipped cream without the use of their hands--Hall got his.
