Two years old, the Port Perry Club has introduced many seniors to the art and good times of square danc- ing. The fact that member- ship fluctuates and new members are always needed might be a good example of the enthusiasm the club in- 2 "Interests is open to him; ' stills. ~~ "An entirely new group of people with similar said Mrs. Mill Hele, the club president, whose enthusiasm for the activity is catching. Mrs. Hele and husband, Lou, learned to dance here and are now going regularly to an Oshawa area square dance club. "Our circle of friends have really grown," she said. "We have some- thing in common with many other people." There's been a transfor- mation at the Heles over the past two years, according to Mill. She said her husband never liked dancing, and had to be dragged out to such activities. "But look at him now,' she smiled, pointing to one of the dancers on the Latcham Centre floor. "Hardly looks 75, does he?" Here in Port Perry, the club operates Wednesday mornings at the Latcham Centre from 10 to 12:30. The group is a branch organiz- ation of the local Senior Citizens Club, and member- ship in the dance group is restricted to those over 55. "But again," points out Mrs. Hele, 'once learned, there are many other organ- izations, groups, and dances around, with no restric- tions." To avoid the instruction- educatjon atmosphere, the club stresses the fun aspect of square dancing. Members are encouraged to come, but will miss a session or two when they don't feel up to it. "We want this to be fun first," said Mrs. Hele. Although there is no charge for the instruction (the instructor is paid for with a New Horizons grant), the group is collecting 50 cents a week to go for social activities, dances, food and other such activities. During the year, the group hosts a dance here, inviting neigh- bouring clubs such as the Oshawa group to attend. The club keeps attracting new members, although many more are needed. There's a manpower short- age, according to Mr. Hele, who thinks men are often embarrassed or shy about joining such a group. Often, one of the ladies must take the man's position in the circle. But there are signs that more men are becoming interested...and willing to come out. Who says all the "'swing- ing" and "rocking' is done by the under 30's?
