New driver licence classifications Feb. 1st. Beginning February 1, 1977, a new driver licence classification system will be introduced in Ontario, Mini- ster of Transportation and - AJ 14 Communications James > ¢ Snow has announced, . "While the new driver licence classification -pro- gram will include - every Ontario person 'who oper- ates any kind of motor ¥ o _ vehicle," said the Minister, * "only about 200,000 of the province's four million drivers will have to take any action to be re-classi- fied." The program is aimed at 6 o matching a driver's skills and responsibilities with the kind of vehicles driven. All drivers will have 'a lidence relating to a specific dlass; thus a driver will be permit- ted to drive ONLY the vehicles indicated in that class. There will be no oper- ator's or chauffeur's licen- ces; being paid to drive will no longer be a factor. Drivers of cars or light trucks up to 18,000 lbs. will be in Class "G". - Motorcyclists will be in Class "M". Such drivers need take no action. They should keep their present licence. After the first year of the pro- gram they will be issued a new licence automatically upon renewal or when a replacement licence is issued for any reason. Presently licenced school 'bus drivers must convert to a Class "B" or "E" licence which covers school buses in the new system. Licen- ced school bus drivers will receive a letter from the Ministry in February ex- plaining how to convert their licences. They must act on this letter by 'August 31, 1977. For drivers of heavier vehicles such as commer- cial buses, trucks and tractor-trailers; the new program will insist on re-. classification.
