Peters: ting into politics was a 'natural sequence.of events for me. I was asked to serve on the Port Perry cil but after five years I had to quit because of the demands of my practice. There were only two doctors practicing here at the time, so there was a lot to do. I served on the high school board after that, but in the third year I was elected to the legislative assembly and it all started to tell on the practice. For the first two years I man- aged to struggle through my practice by putting in dread-. . ful hours, but after two years I had to quit (school board). . Q: Are you ever saddened knowing you were unable to get into medicine as deeply as you might have wanted to, due to your political responsibilities? A: Yes, that was the most difficult decision from the very first. When I ran first, the idea was to stay in for, one parliament and perhaps a second one. But -that would be it. My Sundays were spent speaking all over Ontario. 1 didn't feel I could contribute my share.(as clerk). I was appointed to pensions board of the national church body which really whetted my interest in all phases of the church. I was then appoint- ed to the board of evan- gelism for three years, and 12 years ago I became a member of the Presbyterian Building Corporation which arranges financing for churches.
