HOME BUILDING CENTRE » Ed Cann It is that time of year again when we send two representatives -to compete in the area finals for public speaking. This year the competition was very stiff and I am sure that our four judges, Mr. Phillip, Miss Zarowny, Mr. Rutledge and - Nulty, Mrs. Lee had a very difficult time deciding who the winners were going to be. Their final decision was that Anne Tapscott came second and Eddy Canning was first. The other six finalist were Tammy Ross, Leslie Mc- Dawn Meisner, OPP phase-out to take three years After arranging a meeting between Durham Chairman Walter Beath, Regional Police Commission Chair- man Tom Jermyn; chief Jon M. Jenkins of the Dur- ham Region Police Force and Ontario Solicitor Gen- eral John MacBeth, Dur- ham-York MPP Bill New- man announced that the Solicitor _ General has agreed to a phase-out period of three years for the Ontario Provincial Police to turn over its policing duties to the Durham Region Police force. Because of a recent in- creased unconditional grant for. Regional Policing, all regional municipalities were being asked to assume region-wide policing of their own. The O.P.P. was to stop providing regional policing in Durham on March 31, 1977. "After I discussed the situation with Mr. MacBeth and explained the problems that would arise if Durham was to meet the March 1977 dealine, it was agreed that there would be a three-year phase out period' according to Newman. "I know that people have been happy with the O.P.P. service, so it didn't make sense to me to disturb it before Durham is ready to do the same excellent job." - for ng tops Cornish speakers Denise Gibson, Linda Albers and Sandra Pearse. Anne "and Eddy went to the area finals Tuesday, February 15 and will also be competing in the Legion competiton. We wish them good luck. The card party was a smashing hit this year, There was lots of prizes to be won and all that attended it enjoyed themselves. Special thanks goes to Mr. Coverby for doing a super- lative job of organizing it and we also thank the parents for their support. The top prize, a stéak dinner two at Emiel's Restaurant went to Mrs. Linda Bray. Mr. and Mrs. Cook received baskets of fruit for being the eldest lady and gent.
