The cars, most between the years of 1958 and 1962 have become very popular with all age groups, because of the' scarcity of the models. According to John, last year the buyers of these cars were mainly between = the ages of 28 to 40 years... "These people were young when Corvettes first became available to the public, and have always wanted to own one. And now, some 8ix- teen years later, they are just getting into the finan- cial position to be able to afford one," John surmises. While not the ultimate car, the Corvette is one of the most popular North Ameri- can sports cars. Since the first car rolled off the assembly line at Flint, Mich- igan some 24 years ago, the car has increased in popu- larity to the point that in 1977, about 45,000 of the over $10,000. cars will be built. Mr. Young has been for- tunate in locating old Cor- vettes, due to a friendship struck-up while he was on vacation in Dallas, Texas last year. While there he found Luey Waldon, owner of a Texas Corvette dealership. They became good friends and set up an arrangement where Mr. Waldon would locate the old cars, and then notify - . John so he could fly down and drive the cars back. Last summer, John made numerous trips to Dallas, but in January this year, "after accumulating seven old 'vettes" in Texas, a truck was hired and all the cars were shipped back in one load. . "Flying down isn't bad, but when you have to drive over 24 hours to get back, it isn't much fun," says John. The nd for old cars in general, and particularly Corvettes, is getting larger every year, and the nice part about buying the old model is that the buyer is almost guaranteed not to lose mone "They get more valuahle every year you own then," John says. "Par- ents just don't seem to understand that," he said. Younger buyers, accord- ing to Mr, Young, tend to prefer a splashy, beefed-up model, while the middle age buyer prefers to see the car as close to original as pos- sible. John is not the only dealer interested in old cars, and bringing back the cars from the U.S. is not a new idea. Others dealers within the area have been importing old cars, not necessarily Corvettes, for a number of years now. . Any car being brought over the border from the United States must be at least 15 years old to comply with the American antique laws, and then a tarrif must be paid at the border before they can enter Canada. "Many private citizens from Canada venture forth to the U.S. to buy old cars, because they are cheaper, and have no rust if they come from the southern states," he says. John told the Star that he has always liked Corvettes, especially the models prior to 1967. "I bought my first 'Vette' when I was 19 years old," he says, 'and since than I have always had at least one."
