That is the message that 'was delivered to some 50 representatives of electrical - contractors, farm equip- ment dealers, farm feed companies and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food at an agricultural energy conservation semi- nar sponsored by Ontario Hydro at its Regional office in Willowdale. Bill Cooke, a Hydro Agri- cultural Applications Super- visor, described three re- search projects carried out with the co-operation of far- mers which indicated met- hods of saving energy and costs. Air-to-air heat exchangers _._installed in a barn housing 8,000 ducks at the King Cole farm: in Newmarket was credited with saving $800. in "its first two months of oper- ation, A dimmer control and __time clock system in a bro-_ iler chicken barn operated by Bruce Chidley at Noble- ton shows that nearly a quarter of a million dollars can be saved annually by the province's broiler rais- ers by reducing lighting le- vels while still producing as good or even better broilers. Installation of a heat ex- changer in a milk cooling system on a diary farm at Snelgrove produced savings of at least $20 a month in a recent winter test. Severalindustry speakers at the three-hour evening seminar described applica- tions of their particular pro- ducts that could lead to energy savings. They in- cluded Roy Binns of Marr Electric, Weston, Bill Bloomfield of American Su- perior Electric, Toronto, Wayne Beath of Surge Dairy Equipment, Port Cre- dit and Tom Kilmer of In- dusco Sales, Toronto, -Re- presenting the O.M.A.F. was Jim Myslik, Agricul tural Engineer at Bramp- ton. Setting the tone of the meeting, George Awde, a Hydro Commercial Appli- cations Supervisor, said, "Unless the -growth--in-de- mand for electricity throughout the province can be reduced from its tradi- tional rate of seven per cent, electrical brownouts will occur regularly as ear- ly as 1980."
