2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Mar. 30, 1977 Scugog could benifit from Lindsay plan Oddfellows sixth Fellowship Evening Scugog Township would be one of the municipalities to benefit from the establish- ment of a garbage disposal- reclamation plant as . pro- posed by the Town of Lind- say. Lindsay Councillor Jim Flynn told the STAR last week that the Scugog- Oshawa area would be in- cluded in the plant's service area, and suggested that Port Perry could possibly become one of a series of transfer stations for the shipment of garbage to the plant. Mr. Flynn said that the meetings are to he set up soon with neighbouring municipalities in the Oshawa-Peterborough-Port. Hope area. "We hope to set these meetings up over the next few weeks, perhaps a month," he said. 'There's no rush. The project will probably take five years or more to become a reality." He said talks about involv- ing Scugog and Oshawa in the service area would be held first at the regional level. ' 'Coun. Flynn revealed that the first move by Lindsay came earlier this Kinsmen fertilizer blitz Spring must have Zertain- ly arrived, even though some days we have our doubts. The Kinsmen Club of Port Perry are gearing up for their annual Fertilizer Blitz which will be held on Satur- day, April 9th, throughout the community. The door-to-door blitz will give locals a chance to pur- chase their spring fertilizer or weed 'n feed, and at the same time help the Kinsmen with their continuing work in the community. When the local Kinsmen knock on your door, give them your support. month - when area M.P.P. and town representatives met with Ontario Environment Min. ister George Kerr regarding Lindsay's proposed garbage -disposal-reclamation plant, He called the meeting a complete 'success, saying that the ministry is in com- plete agreement with the concept of a regional dis- posal-reclamation plant and will assist representatives of the town who will be approaching neighbouring municipalities with the idea. Mr. Flynn and other representatives visited the ministry's experimental garbage disposal-reclamat- ion plant at Downsview last Thursday as part of a fact- gathering exercise before 'neighbouring municipaliti are contacted. : But while he's convinced transitional basis until the reclamation plant takes over, , Lindsay, in a brief to the envronment 'ministry pro- posing the shared use facil ity, points out that' the town's present landfill site is a source of pollution. In many ways, Lindsay's garbage problem is a reflec- tion of our own problems in the Region. It's been called "a garbage crisis", especi- ally in the Whitby-Oshawa area, and there are indicat. ions that efforts to establish more sites in the area will meet opposition from residents. . Lindsay has already gone that route, and point out in the brief to the ministry that attempts to establish a new landfill site in one of the townships in Victoria County has been met by effective objections and resistance from area citizens. "When it comes to dispos- ing of garbage, we are all in abou the same boat," he said. %, ? \ nde. on 3 3 It has been a year since Mr,.
