& | es by Pine' Ridge Garden Club "prepares busy schedule The Board of Directors of the Pine Ridge Garden Club met at thé Municipal Office, Port 'Perry, on Thursday June 2nd. x It was resolved that the show committee develop and set rules for a Best Garden competition to be announced in July. Several classes would allow for differences in size, age and location. Awards would be made 'in conjunction with the club's display at Black- stock fair. After discussing suggest- ed plantings at the museum site 'and suggested locations for hanging floral baskets in the township it was decided that the club should concen- trate on planning projects this year for the: 1978 season. This' would allow time for arrangements to be made for maintainence and watering. Roy Grierson announced that a full programme umtil December was now sched- uled and the 1978 schedule was being planned. The July speaker would be from Green Cross products to demonstrate pesticides and disease control. Arrangements were finalized for the bus trip Playground dollars per week for a family. Or, five dollars per child for the full six weeks with a maximum of $15.00 for families. x Playground's director is Joan Healey with the associ- ate director being Debbie McLaughlin. - This year's assistants are Debbie Lee, Ruth Scriver, Sharon Wall-- ace, Kim Owen, Joy Pana- baker and Jean Horton. If there are any further questions, please call 985-7028. SPECIAL ATHLETIC PROGRAMME This year we hope to have a bigger and better Athletic programme for boys and girls, ages 10 to 14. The programme will run from July 4th to August 12th, and guided tour of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Hamileon on Thursday, July 7th. Thestrip is on a weekday to enable the club members to be given special treat- ment and a full tour of the many gardens. The tour is designed to avoid walking excessive distances. For those club members unable to take weekday trips, a weekend trip to, Edwards Gardens for the Dahlia Show may be ar- ranged in September. It was also noted that since over two-thirds of the club membership are from Port Perry and Blackstock areas it was not appropriate for newspaper reports on the club to appear under Nestleton news. Efforts will be made to reflect the town- ship-wide memberbhii in future press reports. Blake Gunter reported he had donated two books to the library and had receiv- ed a donation from Mr. Kenyon of Seagrave. Mrs. Beryl Nicholson was appointed Treasurer to replace Brian Newton, who has given up the position due to conflicting work commitments. LACKSTOCK - ONTARIO 986-4201 PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 29, 1977 -- 19 Delighful concert ends Town Hall season Young Artists in Concert, the final presentation at Town Hall 1873, 1976-77 sea-: son was a fitting and successful climax of an interesting and diversified program schedule. - Fitting, because the parti- cipating amateur artists were either local or from neighbouring communities. Successful, because the young artists were talented and presented a fine pro- gram to an alert and enthusiastic audience of about 100. Diane Lackie, Port Perry High School teacher and highly talented theatrical performer and director introduced the young artists to the audience from the stage prior to Beverly Simmonds opening the program with a piano selec- tion of three numbers of S. Rachmaninoff, J. Brahms and E. Grieg. Miss Simmonds is a strong and expressive, performer, which showed up particular- ly in Prelude in G Minor by Rachmaninoff. However, in Grieg's, I Love Thee, she played with the emotion and tenderness the composition demands. Nancy Evans, Mezzo- Soprano, one of four sisters taking part was next on the program. Miss Evans has a pleasant voice and deliver- ed her four songs with warmth and tenderness. She was very capably accompanied by her sister Joan on the piano, During. her second appearance, Miss Simmonds played three numbers among them Polonaise in A Major by F. Chopin and Variations on the welknown hymn Fairest Lord Jesus, interestingly arranged by Attwood. Following a brief inter- mission, the four Evans sisters entered the stage. Nancy, Mezzo-Soprano; Susan, Soprano; Joan, Accompanist; and the youngest Marie, turning the music pages for the accom- panist. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence kvans of Ux- bridge have yet another two daughters who also play musical instruments, Nancy and Susan, gave a fine rendition of three songs, chosen suitably for their pleasant voices, accompanied competently by Joan, The climax of the evening 'was without a doubt the execution of Felix Mendel- sohn's Concerto in G Minor by Beverly Simmonds as soloist and Richard Watson on a second piano playing the score normally played by a full symphony orchestra. It was an excellent per- formance and the audience showed their appreciation by giving the two artists a rousing, standing ovation. Town Hall 1873 deserve a great deal of credit for giv- ing the young artists an opportunity to give of their talent. Few knew very little about Beverly Simmonds, Richard Watson, Susan, Nancy and Joan Evans prior to this .concert and who knows, perhaps this could be the start on a long - successful careers for them. The concert piano Miss Simmonds played on was loaned to Town Hall 1873, courtesy of D. Williams, Principal of Port Perry High School. As 'a momento, Diane Lackie, on behalf of Town Hall 1873 presented each of - the participants with a small token of appreciation. Marie Devereux a much respected piano and vocal tutor was present at the concert and listened intent- ively to the four girls per- forming, all promising students of hers. Mrs. Devereux now resides in Aurora, but is well known to Port Perry and area for her great contribution in the teaching of music here some years ago. She re- ceived a hearty ovation when she was introduced to the audience. * panel.
