22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Thursday, August 4, 1977 DeHart claims misquote Oshawa councillor John DeHart claims he was mis- quoted' during regional de- bates, July 27 in which he was reported to have re- plied to Scugog councillor Reg Rose "What kind of ministers do they have up in , Port Perry?" vd An Oshawa newspaper carried the quote on its front page July 27 and on the front page of the York- Durham section of the Toronto Star. Councillor DeHart was replying to a statement from councillor Rose, chairman of the Social Services committee, who suggested that it is cheaper for the region to: pay welfare to- unmarried couples living together than it would be to pay them if _ they were living separately. In a telephone interview with Port Perry Star last Thursday councillor DeHart claimed he actually said "what kind of minister is Rev. Reg Rose?" and did not refer to ministers in general in Port Perry. He elaborated on his statement this way: 'When Rev. Rose made the statement that it is cheaper for the region to pay welfare to people living together, I kind of lost my cool. It is very hard for me to hear a man of the cloth say that, and it's very hard for me to see a council condone this kind of action." Councillor DeHart ad- mitted that councillor Rose was just stating a fact and that it did not necessarily mean that he condoned that fact. Following the alleged quote by councillor DeHart during the debates in council, Regional Chairman Walter Beath asked him to apologise publicly, and when the councillor made what the chairman thought was only a half-hearted apology, he asked him to leave the Chambers. By a vote of 14-13 council allowed DeHart to remain, and Councillor Rose was one of those who voted in favour of allowing him to stay. In explaining his state- ments, councillor DeHart told the Star that he is Uxbridge becoming 'browned off' with the welfare system, especially the increase of single males on the roles, and the payments to common-law couples. "I'm not a moralist," he said. "But by God, the taxpayer is getting fed up with that sort of thing, If people want to live together, that's OK, but not at public expense." Councillor DeHart said he is a member of the United Church, and does not attend on a regular basis. approves new arena location A $750,000 arena complex for Uxbridge will be located on the corner of Brock Street and Centre Road, the Township of Uxbridge council decided July 21. Council agreed to purchase five acres for $50,000 from Dorchester Heights Development Ltd., with the remaining 6.5 acres being donated by company. Plans for the complex include one ice surface, 1000 seats for spectators, six change rooms, a manager's office, referee's room, public washrooms, and concession stands. A 300-seat community centre is planned for the top floor and a second ice sur- face could be installed in the future if the population of the community warrants it. Damage to the wall behind the stove was extensive, custom cupboards were destroyed, and electrical wiring in the ceiling above the kitchen was also de- stroyed. Intense heat melt- ;, ed water pipes in the ceiling above the kitchen. by Deb McLaughlin Hot Line Flash.....A mysterious pickle bottle was found floating in Lake Scugog. It contained a note from the notorious Captain Hook and the Three Muska- teers revealing the location of a treasure somewhere on the lost Island of play- ground. Step by step direc- tions to the treasure were found clandestinely hidden in such places as the foun- tain, the large tree by the school and the drain pipe. The treasure was dug out of the sandbox by pirate Kevin Gibson. Much to our amazement the treasure chest contained Sofee Toffee! (much more valu- able to Playground than gold!) Needless to say Captain Hook's treasure didn't last long. Last Tuesday, of ourse, was Pirate Day at Black- Mysterious pickle bottle | stock Playground. To get into the Pirate mood we read the story 'Look Out for Pirates".-.' Later we played "What time is it Captain Deb' and answered questions "Ai Ai Captain" with a salute. We then paraded down the big main street of Blackstock. (We refrained from plundering and pillaging). . We returned to the school to sing Happy Birthday to Aaron Lishman. Tuesday also included a farewell party for Melissa and Jeff Beattie. Cindy and Paul Allen's mother brought down a lovely cake to add to the party. We will miss Jeff and Melissa very much. Wednesday, 'Play Day", the children enjoyed the special Athletics Program"s interpretation of Little Red Riding Hood. Also I com- pletely lost my voice. I explained I had a frogain my throat but they couldn't understand why I didn't let it out! Alas, the joys of Playground. We hope to finish off the last two weeks of Play- ground with many Special Activities. Thursday,-August 4th will be our big "Hallowe'en Party. We have many super ideas for this festivity so we hope many will be out to enjoy it. The last Tuesday August oth, will be Circus Day where the children may dress up as an animal or someone in the circus. (Mother's imaginations will be tested once more!) The final Wednesday the children may bring their lunches as we are going on a picnic hike. Do you remember what Galaglouchie: Day is? That's on Friday! See you there!
