"They told me the pay was lousy," said Steve in an interview last week at the Janetville area farm of Frank Fry. While the pay (about $65 for a long six-day week) is not going to make Steve a rich young man by any means, it does add some- thing to what he called a . "great experience," on the dairy farm this summer. And while Steve has been enjoying. the benefits of a healthy active farm life with plenty of good food and some hard work, too, many of his high school friends are stuck in the hot city without summer jobs. Steve got involved in the Junior Agriculturalist pro- gram through the guidance officer at the high school where he is a grade 10 student. Organized and partially funded by the provincial government, the program offers summer farm em- ployment to students from non-farm backgrounds. It . is designed to provide the farmer with labour during the busy haying time, and also give people like Steve a chance to get out of the city and experience farm life first-hand. When Steve arrived at the Fry farm on June 20, he had no agriculture experience whatever. That changed quickly and within a short time he was getting involv- ed in all aspects of farm work. Milking 40 Guernsey cattle means getting up before six each morning and then going through the same task again in the evening. It also means keeping the milking equip- ment clean. And between milkings Steve was required to help take about 10,000 bales of hay off, dig holes for fence posts, help care for the animals, repair machinery and even cut the lawn around the farmhouse. Admitting that the farm work allows him very little spare time, Steve says with rea" -AIR CONDITIONING - oe Now is the time to have your furnace serviced and cleaned for the next heating season. e Parts for all makes & models. e Blown-in Attic Insulation. e Central Air Conditioning (Installed & Serviced] * 2 Ton Unit priced from $950. up. e New Oil, Gas, Electric, Forced Air Units Installed | 985-7951 l. for fast, prompt, courteous service | a smile that it "sure beats Steve is going to run into a it is not, he feels confident bit of a problem. Under the that the experience gained this year will allow him to bumming around the city." The farm life has obvious- terms of the program he is ly appealed to him. He has only allowed one summer's get work on some farm on gained 15 pounds and grown placement on a farm. He is his pwn next summer. He "a couple of inches." Steve said he enjoys the work so made for him next year. If trouble. much that he would like to : oo hoping an exception may be shouldn't have very much stay beyond the August 20 termination date. He suggested that his = enthusiasm is motivated hy bl two things: he has always had an interest in ammals and agriculture, and some day, if possible, he might like to work his own farm. "But before that, I figured I'd better see what it's all . about," he said. Despite this enthusiasm and his desire to work, i. : IE ~~ ahed a 4 -- @ 21 Luxurious Rooms E let { -- Rallroadhouse Motor Motel Paul - Asta Larsen ® El Heated - Air Conditioned - Cable T.V. @ Breakfast Lounge [Guests Only] ® Facility for Seminars - Meetings, etc. PORT PERRY, ONTARIO Telephone: (416) 985-8131 TO EXPROPRIATE LAND after the first publication of the notice. thirty days after the first publication of the notice.
