FARM SCENE | CROPS TWILIGHT MEETING 3 On the evening of Tuesday, July 19th, the annual § Twilight Meeting, sponsored by the Ontario County Soil and Crop Improvement Association, was held at the farm of William Werry, R. R. 2, Oshawa, with an excellent attendance of interested farmers and 4-H field crop club members. The project plots included four alfalfa varieties namely Anchor, Thor, Iroquis and Pioneer 520. These plots had been seeded with a nurse crop in the spring of 1977, and mucly of the alfalfa at the time of visiting the plots, was 15 to 18 inches in height, and starting to flower. These plots will be part of our demonstration program over the next several years, and records will be kept on such things as winter survival and. aftermath recovery, etc. Also, on the Werry farm were a number of spring 0 "grain plots including Peguis, Perth, and Laurier g barley, and Elgin oats in pure stands, as well as mixtures. The mixtures were made up as follows - Elgin and Perth, Elgin and Laurier, Garry and Peguis, and Garry and Herta. Yields will be taken at harvest time, and differences in varieties will be noted, as well as differences. in yields between pure stands and mixtures. Anyone interested in comparing these varieties as they are growing in the field would be welcome to call at the Werry farm. Comments on the plots were made by Mr. Neil Moore, Soils and Crops Specialist. Also, taking part in the program was Mr. Ralph Gregg, Agricultural Engineer, who spoke on the Agricultural Code of Practice, and its application to the farm business. Mr. Gregg explained how the Code could protect the farmer from encroachment by individual houses or snhdivisions as well as how the farm is affected by existing dwellings in the area. Plans are underway to hold another Twilight Meeting in the north part of the area on the evening of Tuesday, September 6th, at which time we will visit fertilizer demonstration plots on the farm of John Warren, Brechin, and corn variety plots at the farm of Clarence Hewitt, Beaverton. 525252525252525¢5¢ ACACICIGICIGIS 0252525252525252525252525252 525252525252 52585252 525252525 525252525e 5252 525252525058 55205 Te Te Tk 52525252 52525252525252525¢ 5252525¢ S252 HOME ECONOMIST APPOINTED Effective at the end of July 1977, Miss Beatrice McClenaghan, Home Economist for Ontario and York, will transfer to Huron County as Home Economist for that area.
