8 -- PORT PERRY STAR ~-- Thursday, August 4, 0:2 Rose and Fulford critical Parts of Anglican report on retarded called very dangerous Rev. Reg Rose of the Anglican Church in Port Perry, and Elizabeth Ful- ford, chairman of the Central Seven Association for the Mentally Retarded, expressed criticism of some aspects of a controversial report prepared for the Anglican Church which called for the killing of severely retarded infants. Rev. Rose said he had not read the full report, but from portions he had seen in newspaper reports, he stressed that he "certainly does not approve." He termed the parts about kill- ing newborn infants "very dangerous," and expressed * % % * - 30 or. FREE DRAWS CASE OF POP from Pop People. Value $6.00. The controversy broke last week when daily news- papers started carrying seg- ments of the 15-page report prepared for a discussion at the Anglican Church Synod later this month. The report said 'that an infant © with severe neurological defects may not be human," and then went on to de- scribe humanness as: "The capacity for man to relate to himself, with his neigh- bour and with God." Another portion of the report said "'Our senses and emotions lead us into the grave mistake of treating human looking shapes as if they were human...In fact the only way to treat such defective infants humanely is not to treat them as human...." The report, called Task Force on Human Life, was prepared by 11 people with backgrounds in medicine, theology, nursing and law, and was commissioned at a General Synod meeting two years ago. Central Seven chairman Elizabeth Fulford told Port Perry Star that she person- ally has a lot of respect for the people who prepared the report that deals in part with a topic that few want to discuss. While suggest- ing that the media may have blown the controversy out of proportion, and stres- sing that she was speaking on behalf of herself and not Central Seven as an organ- ization, she said that she cquld not justify in her own mind any decision on who should have 'the right to decide on who lives or dies. She suggested that once an infant is born it is a human being no matter how - - Choir continues severely handicapped mentally or physically. Mrs. Fulford said she yas not necessarily surprised to learn that afehort had been prepared on such a difficult human and moral topic, but added that some of the ¢om- ments in the report "offen- ded her." Both Rev. Rose and Mrs. through by Mrs. Earl Reader Mr. and Mrs. Robt. + Cawker have returned from a week's vacation to Quebec and the Gaspe Peninsula. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Carter also enjoyed a bus tour to the East Coast. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Samells and children spent most of the past week at their Gull Lake cottage. What a pleasure to see Mrs. Stephen of Estavan, Sask. in our midst again! It was a pleasant surprise when Mrs. Bonnie Gerrow learned of her mother's sudden decision to fly East to see her four daughters and their families. We are sorry to hear Mrs. Morven Hughes has been hospitalized again. We trust she will soon return to good health again. Attendance at the Island Church has remained con- siderably higher this July than July of 1976. There are several children attending too "and they enjoyed the story of lesson especially prepared for them. Sunday, the story involved little animals and especially four mentioned in the Bible. The first was about the ant which is an exceptionally hard worker and wise in preparing for its future. Children also prepare for their adult life by going to school and church. There- fore they were urged to be as wise as the ant, to be a Offers Escorted MOTORCOACH TOURS SUMMER ¢ FALL KENTUCKY GEORGIA & TENNESSEE / 9 DAY Depart July 23, Aug. 21, Sep. 24, & Oct. 15. Rose said that several things" could happen to the report when it comes up for discussion later this month in Calgary. It would be adopted, modified or thrown out completely. Even if it was adopted, which Rev. Rose suggested would be most unlikely, it would in no way be binding on the Church or its members. summer credit to their families, and bless someone's life every- day. . Tho' many people are tak- ing holidays at intervals, the choir is remaining steady and everyone was _ thrilled with their music. We are looking forward to the presence of the other people who have promised to join in later. We hope everyone was aware of the changed prac- tice time this week. The Freemans are very generous and loyal with their leadership. Mr. Randy Scott who liv- ed in the "Head" commun- ity for five years during his teaching terms, has now taken up permanent resi- dence at Fralick's Beach. His father from Leamington enjoyed -the weekend help- ing him get settled and gett- ing acquainted with the new area where building of -many new homes is steadily progressing. The ladies of the "Head" U.C.W. provided food for a small wedding reception in Port Perry on Saturday. Now everyone is interest- ed in the growing Western Weekend in Port Perry.
