Empringham The morning of August 10th was cloudy and threat- ening but it didn't: dampen the spirits of over 40 people consisting of Greenbank and Port Perry districts of the Women's Institutes and friends when they left on a chartered bus trip. The first stop was the Peterborough Centennial Museum where we wandered at will, through the many displays." One of the most interesting was a relief map made to scale of the whole of the Trent Valley Water Ways. We then visited the famed lift locks. After a lunch in the park the tour continued east from Peter- borough and visited the Heri- tage Pine Village which con- tained a furniture factory where we saw the making of Impaired driving brings *500 fine A Port Perry man was fined $500 in provincial court in Whitby last Friday after pleading not guilty to a charge of driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in the bloodstream. Gerald Breen of 292 Lilla Street testified that he was threatened by a man whose house he was at if he didn't move his car. Judge Nor- man Edmondson didn't accept the story, saying that according to the crim- inal code a person must prove fear of immediate death or grievious. bodil: injury in order to use com- pulsion as a defence. Also in court Friday, Vernon Murray, 20, of 274 Rosa Street was fined $200 or two weeks in jail after D0... convicted on a charge of drunk driving. Pleading guilty to a charge of careless driving resulted in a fine of $200 or 20 days in jail for Randy Crawford, 18, of 29 Crandel Street, Port Perry. Charges of drunk driving and having liquor in his car were withdrawn. A fight at Scugog Arena July 16 resulted in a fine of $100 against John Kuenen,' 19, of Uxbridge. The accus- ed admitted in court the fight started because of a girl. In making the sentence the judge told Kuenen that the next time he wants to fight in a 'public place, he should put on the gloves and get into a boxing ring. COUPON 08d pine furniture and a show- room of completed pieces. We then travelled on .to Lang, Ontario which is south east of Peterborough where we visited the Pioneer Century Village. The Peterborough County Council bought the site in 1966 as a Centennial project. The heritage of the district is being preserved by moving log houses made by the first settlers and a number of other buildings of the early years and form a village. All places are furnished with items of - their particular times. We arrived home a tired but happy group and our thanks go to the group in charge, Mrs. Fred Phoenix, Mrs. H. Phoenix and Mrs. R. Baird. The regular August meet- ing of the Greenbank Women's Institute was held at the beautiful home of Mrs. F. Phoenix on August 17th when we celebrated the 80th anniversary year of the Federated Women's Insti- tute of Ontario. The presi- dent Mrs. G. Beaton presid- ed and after singing the Opening Ode and repeating the Mary Stewart Collect she welcomed the members and visitors and thanked the hostess for opening her home to the meeting. She then read a poem on happiness. She dealt briefly with the business at hand. It is asked that bits of yarn and scraps TRwEEL FREE 1 Qt. QUAKER STATE MOTOR OIL WITH *10. Mrs. Cawker spoke on the Ontario Provincial birthday party held at Bingham Park in Kitchener. The Women's Institute was formed at the Erland Lee home at Stoney Creek where the constitution was written. This home is now a museum home run by the W.I. It is hoped in the next three years a fund will be raised, the earnings of which will pay for the upkeep of this home. Mrs. Phoenix spoke on the life of Mrs. Marion Fulton of Winnipeg, who is Dominion representative for the A.C.W.W. (Associated Country Women of. the World) which is a world wide association of - all country women from all parts of the world. The meeting for 1977 is to be held in October at Nairobi, Kenya. The motto for the month was, '"Where music is ap- preciated, happiness reigns'. Mrs. H, Phoenix ably cover- ed the topic showing the different types of music which suits different types of people. A sing-song and contest were enjoyed. The draw for a quilt which had been made by the W.I. members of Green- bank took place, Mrs. Lewis doing the honours. Mrs. Carol Jeffs of Don Mills, a niece of one of our-mem- bers, was the lucky winner. A birthday cake com- memorating the 80th birth- day .of the Institute was cut by our guest, Mrs, Cawker. After singing O Canada and the Insitute grace we sang Happy Birthday to the hostess for the day. A lovely luncheon was en- joyed by all. Visitors Recent visitors at home of Mrs. E. Hayes were Doug Hayes, wife Marcelle and daughter Laura and son Jim from Calgary, Alberta, Also visiting Mrs. Hayes were Mr. and Mrs. Don Smithers (Cecile; and daughter Alicia of Hull, Quebec. Gong Show winners Sandy Wragg, a balloon dancer and Allan John Mackenzie, accompanying her on guitar, captured top prize in the Gong Show at the Holiday Inn Thursday night. The two performers from Little Britain won the use of a camper trailer for a month or can have a canoe to keep. Wragg also received a weekend for two and dinner at the Holiday Inn although she was gonged in her middle eastern dance pre- sentation... A six-week riding course was also awarded to Mac- kenzie for placing third in a solo singing and guitar-play ; ing role. About the causeway (continued) done a strong wind blew the floating bridge from its moorings, and the steamer Woodman had to be em- ployed to tow it back into position, but the bridge was never straight after that. In 1934, the Ontario County Council, which now controls the road, began drawing earth and widened the bridge to take care of the motor traffic. An important and per- manent piece of road build- ing was done for this local- ity by the Port Perry, Scugog and Cartwright Roadway Co. They built that stretch of road across the marsh east from Scugog Island, connecting with the solid land of the Township of Cartwright. Mr. Jos. Bigelow was the Secretary of that Company, and did a very gret deal of work in furthering the scheme. His fellow citizens looked upon that roadway as a fitting monument to his industry. Mr, Aaron 'Ross was Presi- dent of the Company and the route of the road was surveyed by ' Mr. W.E. Yarnold. This roadway is now controlled by Counties of Durham and Ontario. The Durham end was widened and much improved in 1933, Ontario County started to widen the west end in 1934. Before the Cartwright Roadway was built people used to have to go fifteen or sixteen miles around to reach Port Perry from Cartwright, so it is not sur- prising that considerable money was subscribed 'to- ward the project. Here is the list: Port Perry citizens. $1655.; Scugog $243.; Cartwright $440.; Port Perry Corp. $440.; Grand Trunk Rail- road $1500.; Ontario Gov- ernment $1500.; County of Ontario $500.; Counties of Northumberland-Durham $500.; Total $6738.00 66 Brock St. W., Uxbridge 852-5291 D.
