PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1977 -- 21 Can Amrace 'George Follmer ahead of Peter Gethin at Corner One. at Mosport One hour, 16 minutes and 31 seconds after the start of the Molson Diamond Can Am race at Mosport Park, Sunday, a youthful-looking dark haired man from Cannes, France stepped into the winner's circle. As flash cameras split the gathering gloom of the late afternoon, Patrick Tambay politely answered the usual questions about his win, first in French, then in English. "No, I was never in trouble. Yes, the car worked beautifully. Every- thing was perfect." Indeed, it was. - Tambay, driving a red, white and blue Chaparral Lola T-333 - CS led from start to finish. His best lap around the 2.45 mile twisting track was one minute, 15.5 seconds, and he averaged just over 111 miles per hour for the entire 58 laps. The real race, at least from the point of view of spectator excitement was - for second place with Englishman Peter Gethin and American George Follmer duelling during the entire race. And Follmer in It was a disappointing afternoon for the senti- mental favourite, Gilles Villeneuve from Montreal. His Walter Wolf Racing Dallara failed him after 27 laps and he retired with gear box and clutch problems. And four other Canadians in the 26-car field finished well behind the leaders. The 58-lap Molson Diamond Can Am finished three days of racing at Mosport which included a six-hour Trans Am endur- ance race Saturday and Formula Ford races on Sun- day. For his efforts Sunday afternoon, Tambay earned $10,000 by finishing first and another $1800 for the best qualifying times. a Lola T-332 CS won it on the last corner to finish less than one second -ahead of Gethin in a Lola T-333 CS. + They both averaged slightly better than 110 miles per hour. 4 .
