6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Aug. 24, 1977 The Classifieds: they're entertaining, informative . Nee BAT HEN TRUCKS Buy, sell, hire, rent, swap, barter, give away. No matter what you might be looking for, chances are you can find it in the classi- fieds. The classifieds of course are an important aspect of any newspaper, large or small, and the Port Perry Star is no exception. We've heard of some who buy the Star and read noth- ing but the classifieds. Others tell us they are the first pages they turn to, reading them faithfully be- ~ fore going on to the rest of the paper. It is probably safe to say that there are few indeed who read a newspaper without spending at least a couple of minutes Still in 1952, carrots were on the market for a dollar a bushell, delivered, too. Cedar fence posts were sell- ing for 40 cents each, 'And bricklayers were in demand for work on the Port Perry Public School building. The Toronto union rate of $2.35 'per hour was being offered. Going further back in time, to 1942, when Canada and the world was in the middle of war, and the 'pages of the Port Perry Star were filled with news from the fronts and ads extolling those at home to Buy Victory Bonds, a local hairdressing establishment was offering the following: "Shampoo and wave for 50 cents; Marcel for 75 cents; manicure for 35 cents, and permanent waves at $1.95 and up." It would seem from read- ing the classifieds of the 1940's and 50's that farm fences were in poor repair, as farmers advertised often |, that stray animals had been found. The ads usually ran like this: "Found on my property, one heifer. Owner may claim by identifying same and paying for this ad." With Port Perry sur- rounded by a thriving agri- cultural region, Star classi- fieds have been used to buy and 'sell just about every- thing on the farm from "a number of chunks, about 100 (continued on page 8) glancing over the columns, In one form or another the classifieds have always been a part of the Star, and their popularity as a service to the public has grown over the years. In the 1950's for example, the classifieds took up a couple of columns on one page. Today, the Star often carries four pages of columns, most of them from private individ-- uals who have something to sell, rent or give away. And while the classifieds do provide a useful service to the public, they can in themselves make fascinat- ing and at time humerous reading. In fact going through the old issues of yesteryear is like stepping back in time. While many of the classi- fieds of years gone by offer- ed pretty much the same _ things as today, one can come across a few surpris- ing items. For example, in July, 1963, one had the chance to buy a "man's heavy duty bicycle, with knee action and balloon tires" for $20. And in June of that same year somebody was looking for "Live Poultry. Also new goose and duck feathers and ticks. Best prices paid." Farmers today might be interested to know that back in 1963, a new John Deere bailer was selling for the "special price of $1795." That may not have been a bargain then, but at today's prices...... And speaking of bargains, how's this for a sale of "seamless micro-mesh 'nylons special at 49 cent per pair, or three pairs for $1.45 Also face cloths at six for 59 cents in the summer of 1963.
