Mr. Newman added, how- ever, that local charges that the Port Perry 'sewage lagoon system was respons- ible for the pollution are unfounded becquse the system operates on a season- al retention system and Dur- ham region authorities report there has been no - discharge- since the end of May. Mr. Newman cautioned that the water samples submitted by local residents earlier this summer which showed high coliform and fecal bacteria counts were tested by the Health Unit for drinking water standards only. Six recent tests on the Nonquon by the Ministry of the Environment for stream analysis indicated that ex- cept for one station, the pollution levels of the Non- quon fell within acceptable standards. Mr. Burnet decided to take this "action after receiving: water analysis from the Ministry of Health on samp- les he took from two differ- ent areas of the Nonquon, one upstream from the sew- age lagoons, and the other downstream about ohe- quarter mile from Seagrave. The downstream sample, taken June 2 indicated more than 80 counts per 100 milli- litres water of both coliform and fecal bacteria. 'The upstream sample, taken June 9 indicated a coliform count of 14 per 100 ml. water, and a fecal count of 2 per 100 ml. In both instances the Ministry of Health indicated the water would be unsafe for drinking. Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health state that ~ readings of plus 80 'indicate a recent heavy pollution of a sewage orgin," and calls this "potentially dangerous pollution." The lagoon system is dis- .charged into the Nonquon stream twice yearly with the contrgl valves left open for up to two weeks. The first discharge ended May 31, and a spokesman for Durham region, which operates the system, says the next dis- charge will be some time in November, as close to freeze up as possible. They must live on a dairy farm or their father must be employed on a dairy farm or involved in the 'dairy industry. The 'winner will represent On- tario County Milk Producers at many functions before competing for the Ontario title at the C.N.E. next - August. The girls competing for the Ontario County title are Beth Wilson, 17, R.R. 3, Port Perry. Beth will return to grade 12 in September. She is employed on a dairy farm and also part time in a veterinary office. Cathy Robinson, 17, RR 3 Beaverton. Cathy is a grade 12 student at Brock High School, Cannington. Cathy's father is employed at Elm- croft Farms in Beaverton. She is also a member of the Beaverton Junior Farmers and 4-H Calf Club. Cathy Wilson, 20, RR 2, Uxbridge is a full time employee for Lloyd Wilson Auctioneering Ltd. Cathy Reid, 17, RR 2 Ash- burn is a grade 11 student at Anderson High School in Whitby. Cathy works on her father's dairy farm where they milk 160 Ayrshires. Cathy is also'a member of South Ontario County 4-H Calf Club. The contestants are re- quired to give a 1% to 2 minute speech on anything related to the dairy industry. They will be interviewed by a panel of 3 judges and milk a cow. There are no points for the milking part. It is a demon- stration for the public to show the sanitary methods that each farms must prac- tice twice a day to ensure the consumer safe wholesome milk everytime he purchases it. The winner will receive a tiara, roses, trophy and cash award and a professional picture of herself. The other contestants will receive a trophy donated by Port Perry Fair Board and cash award of $40.00.
