12-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Aug. 31, 1977 Something For The 1977 Blackstock Fair lived up to its fine reputa- tion as one of the most progressive one-day fairs in Ontario. The fine relation- ship with the weatherman continued even though for awhile in the forenoon it did look rather questionable. But the weather remained fine and steadily improved "even though neighbouring areas suffered heavy rain. Mayor Lawrence Malcolm officially opened the 112th version of the fair by men- tioning the steady growth that he has seen in his years at our fair. He congratulat- ed president, Lawrence McLaughlin and the direc- tors on the fine community effort. There was a fine number of entries in both heavy and light classes of horses which sl Lewis McGill, Manvers Township Deputy Reeve, provided an. horse show for the horse lovers. Four exciting heats of chariot races during the afternoon added the excite- ment that every good fair needs. A fine cattle exhibit was provided in both the dairy and beef classes. Auction- eer Murray Jackson aution- ed off a fine market steer owned by president, E.L. McLaughlin. This steer was bought by Ron Deeth, presi- dent of Windcrest Farms Ltd. of Port Perry, RR 2 for a handsome price of 59 cents per pound. This champion steer weighed nearly 1200 lbs. This event was follow- ed by the Mutt Show which had classes of fun rather than for pedigree. The frog jumping the farthest dis- tance in three jumps was trained by Chris Geboers of Bowmanville and jumped a distance of 7 feet, 8% inches in three jumps. There were 14 competitors in the class. Tracy Churchill had the Champion Mutt as she and her pet won the most points. The spaghetti eating con- test was won by Beth Schry- burt for the ladies and Brian Mikkelson won for the men and boys. The wheelbarrow race was won by Mr. and Mrs. Larry Schryburt. The cow milking contest always creates a lot of inter- est. This year, was a media milking contest and was won by the only lady entry, Beth . Northey of CK.L.Y. Lind- say. Other competitors who took part in this fun event were Bill Deegan of C.F.R.B. Toronto; Arnie Celsie, C.K. L.B. Oshawa; and Bill John- ston, C.H.0.0. Ajax. A sheep shearing demon- stration by Mr. McGill of Bethany followed by a spinn- ing demonstration created much interest. The arena was filled with fine displays and commer- cial exhibits.
