--_-- PORT @Q P ERRY LVL World Student Games Jim Zoet outstanding playeron Canada team The Canadian men's basketball team, which includes former Port Perry high school standout Jim Zoet, placed fourth in the World Student Games following a 74-67 loss Satur- day to the Czech team. The team's only other loss in the eight-game event was to the Russian squad, which finished second behind the United States. Jim scored four points for the Canadians in the final game Saturday. At seven feet, he is the tallest player on the squad, and he drew the tough assignments of ° handling the big men on the other teams. He sparkled offensively in an earlier game against the host Bulgarian team with a 28-point performance, while holding the top Bulgarian shooter to just 12 points. Larry Elson named best pitcher Larry Elson, formerly of Prince Albert, continued to collect honours for his fast- ball pitching skills this summer. In the Canadian Junior Finals held recently in Sask- atoon, Larry pitched for the Grimsby J.P.'s, who repre- sented Ontario. He was on the mound for four games, including the semi-final and final, and he won all four. Ray Daniels counted the lone goal for the Hornets. The team has a bye this Thursday night, so the next league game will be Sep- tember 8. Z Playoffs for the Hornets get underway at St.Johnhs Field in Uxbridge on Sep- tember 10, and will continue through the following day with the cup final to deter- mine the league chiampions. Lighting for tennis courts continued : consider the installation of a complete new lighting system with the costs to be covered in part by various provincial grants; if they could be obtained. The club was asked at the June 27 meeting to obtain bids for new lighting and applications would be made for the grants on submission of these bids. It was thought that grants from 'Wintarlo and the provincial Com- munity Centres program would cover two-thirds of the costs, and the tennis club would pick up the remain- der. At the August 22 meeting of council, it was learned that there will be no further funds available from the Community centres pro- gram until 1979. This portion of the funding might have to be made available out of the "1978 Township budget. The tennis club would meet its obligations through' mem- berships and a line of credit amounting to some $2,000. Getting lights installed at the tennis courts, which are owned by the municipality, has been an issue for almost two years. On December 8, 1975 a motion was passed by Scugog Council which would have considered a grant of $2500 to come out of the 1976 Township budget. The motion also included the pro- vision that the club be grant- ed use of the courts three evenings a week from 6:00 until 11:00 p.m. Representatives of the - tennis club, which has about 80 members, feel that proper lighting is necessary for sev- eral reasons. It would pro- vide longer evening play for business people who work during the day. It would also allow for clinics to be held in the evening. At present, qualified instructors from out of town cannot be used because the clinic time would be cut short by dark- ness. ! The proposal for lights submitted by Doug Pinder calls for four wooden poles, each with three halite Bulbs, generating a candle power 0 50. This would create nl enough lighting to allow for © tournament play, I RR ds Defeat Kleinburg in two straight Midgets ready for zone finals Ballard Lumber Midgets 'opened their 1977 OASA playoffs August 18 and came up with an 8-1 victory over Kleinburg. The visitors opened the game with a run in the first inning on 2 Port Perry errors but they were shut out the rest of the way as pitcher Kevin Walker allow- ed just 3 hits, struck out 14 batters and did not issue a walk. Port Perry scored - two runs in the 2nd inning, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and 3 more in the eighth. Dan Taylor, had a triple and 3 singles to lead Port. Greg Fedyk had 3 hits, Mark Cleveland and Dennis Franssen each hit doubles and Rick Young had 2 hits. Catcher Mike Doupe drew 3 walks and played a very steady game behind the plate. The win gives Ballards a 1-0 lead in the best of three series with the winner meet- ing Stouffville in the zone final. Ballard Lumber Midgets defeated Kleinburg 7-3 Wed- nesday night in Kleinburg to win the 0.A.S.A. first round in 2 straight games. : The local boys wasted no time as leadoff batter Greg Kedyk ' singled, stolen second base and score on Taylor also scored to give Port a 2-0 lead. Three more runs in the 3rd inning by Steven Geer who walked, Dennis Frans- sen who tripled and Jim Treen.on a walk gave Ball- ards a 5-1 lead. Rick Young and Steve Redman both scored to give Port their final two runs in the 7th. Dan Taylor had 3 hits, Steve Redman 2. Kleinburg scored single runs in the 1st, 3rd and 6th innings as pitcher Kevin Walker allowed 3 hits and struck out 13 batters. Jim Treen did a fine job as catcher in this contest as both regular catchers were absent. Ballards will now meet Stouffville in the zone final, probably Thursday night at home. House League Playoffs The Port Perry Minor Softball Association house league playoffs are under- way. The squirt - house league have-3 teams in a round-robin playoff and Utica Auto Body playing Sportsland. The teams play Wednesday night at the old lakefront park and the Legion diamond. The Bantam girls have had problems getting enough. players to play league so all players should contact their coaches and prepare for the playoffs. A round robin tournament will be held Sat. Sept. 17. The local Bantam Girls team which entered provincial playdowns in the Ontario Rural Softball Assoc. were /defeated in two' straight games by Caledonia. Sun- at home to a more exper- ienced team. These girls will be a lot tougher to knock off next year as they are younger than the Cale- doria team thus most of the team will be back. A good effort by Ernie Abraham and Tom Dean who made the team possible.
