It's your old friend, "Matilda Hobbs' writin' to you agin, Mary. Ever since I wrote that "In Touch" letter to you tellin' you what a great weekly newspaper the Port Perry Star is, I get to itchin' to put my thoughts down on paper, so here t'i:. I've been real busy all summer and I can't belicve it's September all ready. 'I'm sittin' here with my feet up, 'cause they hurt. Went to the Port Perry Fair twice this year. Since * you moved away they got it goin' for two days and I didn't want to miss anything so I got myself up there, and I must'a walked miles. They had so many different kinds of cattle there it made by head spin. Ayreshire, Guernsey, Jersey, Holstein and the Here- fords got to parade around in the Black and White ring, mind you! And those beef cattle, I swear they come in all colours. One of the steers didn't like the fair, I guess, he got loose, ran off in all directions and ended' up in a farmer's field where it was quieter. i Loved the Lindsay Kinsmens Boys and Girls Brass marching band but one poor boy looked a little pale around the gills; guess he was blowing too hard on that big horn. But the show must go on and the band kept playing and marchin' and the President of the fair himself went over to the kid and found a little patch of shade under the flag pole for him to sit down. Hope it was nothin' serious, probably just the sun. It was real sunny for both days, goes to show you them weathermen don't know what it's goin' to be, 'cause they predicted thunder showers. Could be they took the Labour Day weekend off and left the office early on Friday. Big crowd, Mary, real big crowd. Remember how you and I used to like to look real close at those things in the Women's Building? - You should have seen the quilts, Mary! They tell me that the young ladies are stitchin' them now and winnin' prizes too. Do you mind that rug I was hookin'? You know I started that blamed thing ten years ago and every year I say I'm goin' to finish it for the fair. Then fair day rolls around and I'm not finished. Maybe next year...? The baking look good too. May neighbour won the most points for her baking, but they tell me she's on some sort of a diet and she don't eat none of it herself. Seems a shame. When I was walking over by the stables, I saw somethingthat scared me out of my wits. This cow was laying (or is it lying) on top of this little fellow. All that was stickin out was his blue jeans and rubber boots. That nice Mr. Neil Hunter ran over there and booted that cow, and do you know what, Mary? Wasn't a kid at all. Some scalleywag farmers' sons gat to playing a prank. They stuffed the jeans and boots with straw and slipped the dummy underneath the cow when no-one was lookin' Sure had 'em fooled for awhile. Boys will be boys! It sure was fun, Mary. Idid't win nothin at the races, but I bet two dollars. The kids and their horses were in somethin called a "Jim-canna'. Do you think that might be a scottish word? They was a running and trottin around anyhow. They had these little pens there and they called it a "Petting Zoo". I don't know, Mary, but I don't think they had those turkeys in the right place. Never heard on anyone petting turkeys before. Or maybe their owners just parked them there until they had a look-see at the fair. 'There was just no room to walk a couple of turkeys through that crowd, no how; 'specially the Midway. ¢ Had my lunch at the church booth you and I always had a cup of tea and a sandwich at. I had home, cooked beans this year. Don't bother much about cookin' them now I live alone and they were a real treat. Guess I'd better close off this long letter and get to -bed. Wish I was younger, I'd sure like to square dance agin like they was doin' at the fair. Bye for now. Matilda. J ' ' 1].
