N Fr Port Perry Flamingos dropped a 4-2 decision 'to 'Cobourg Lions" Sunday' night at the 'new: Scugog Arena in the first exhibition -game of the year for the: Junior "C'"' team. It was a chippy contest at times with referee Sean Taylor assessing the teams more than 80 minutes in penalties. Port Perry took 50 minutes including three five minute majors, one misconduct, and a game misconduct with less than a minute remaining. Cobourg opened the scoring at the 11:50 mark of the second period with the teams playing five aside. Port Perry had several good scoring opportunities to- wards the end of this period, including two shots that rang off the right goal- post. Jay. Adams counted the first Port Perry goal in the opening minute of the third period with a quick shot from in front of the net. But Cobourg went ahead a couple of minutes later with a goal by Randy Sughrue from a scramble in front of the Port Perry goal. Rob Evans tied the game less than a minute later with a good, hard; wrist shot to the stick side of the Cobourg goalie. Evans had been set up in the slot by George Burnett. But that was the last of the Port Perry scoring. EY Bill Hutchings counted the winner for Cobourg at the 12 minute mark, again from a scramble in front of the net. Goalie Kevin Beere was down and out of Juniors lose pre-season opener to Cobourg squad the play, and the Port Perry defense was unable to clear the puck from the front of the net. The insurance marker for Cobourg came with 6 minutes to play on a long slap shot from inside the blue-line by Garry Hope. Tempers on both sides ran a little thin throughout the game with players indi- cating a willingness tp use the elbow and the stick. The only real fight came with just 25 seconds left in the game when Dale Sawyer of 'Port Perry squared off with Ross McCallum. Both got five minute majors and game misconducts for their troubles. When the players were concentrating on hockey, the Flamingos skated well and had plenty of good scoring chances t. A couple of goal posts, some erratic shooting and an inability at times to finish off the play made the difference. The timing and passing were off, but this was to be expected in the first game together as a unit. Cobourg on the other hand, looked sharper, but the team had already played three exhibition matches prior to Sunday night's game. Kevin Beere and Charlie Durwood split the goal-tending duties and both looked sharp. Durwood showed a quick stick hand, making several tough stops in the first half of the game.' The Flamingo's roster is expected to be trimmed by a couple of players prior to the league opener tentatively scheduled for October 7 in Lindsay. All eyes are on that loose puck in front of the Cobourg nef as Dale Sawyer of Flamingos tries to get his stick on it for a shot on goal. Cobourg defender prepares to sweep the puck out of harms way as Jay Adams circles in the background. Ringette gets off the ground 4 Again on Sunday at. 6 p.m. Ringette got off the af the New Arena.
