Best world drivers at Mosport Grand Prix The best racing car driv- ers in the world are coming to Mosport this weekend for the 1977 Labatt's 'Grand Prix of Canada. Driving Formula 1 cars capable of speeds close to 200 MPH, international stars like Austria's Niki Lauda, Mario Andretti of the United States, Jody Scheckter of South Africa, and defending World Champion James Hunt of England, will race 80 laps around the twisting track at Mosport Park. The Labatt"s Grand Prix, which will be held on Sun- day, October 9, is the next . to last race of the year to determine the World Cham- pionship of Drivers and Intérnational Cup for Form- ula 1 manufacturers. Practice and qualifying rounds will be held on: the Friday and Saturday pre- ceeding the big event on Sunday. The World Championship of Drivers started January 9 in Argentina and features races in 17 countries around the world, After the Cana- dian Grand Prix this week- end, the last races of the season will be held in Japan two weeks later. After 14 events, Niki Lauda was leading with 69 points followed by Jody Scheckter and Mario Andretti with 42 and 41 each. Lauda's success this year is nothing short of miracu- lous, for .in 1976 he was severely injured in a crash in Germany. Badly burned in the fiery accident, many thought Lauda would be lucky to survive, let alone drive again. Lauda will be driving a Ferrari 312T2 at Mosport this weekend. Sheckter, from South Africa, is considered the only driver with a chance of catching Lauda in the points this year. He'll be driving a Wolf WR, part of the racing team assembled by Mon- treal businessman Walter Wolf. Andretti, driving a JPS 78 has seen his 'hopes fade when he blew an engine at four successive Grand Prix races in Europe this year. THE TRACK Mosport track, located ten | * miles north of Bowmanville, is 2.45 miles in length with ten turns. The race will be 80 laps with the drivers coverning-196.7 miles, General admission tickets for all three days of the event will be available at the Mosport gates, Advance "'Supertickets® which include free camping and passes to Gasoline Alley and the racing garage are available from Mobile Tire and Wheel and Whose Who Clothier, both in Oshawa, - a a &
