Mr. Johnston told those present at the meeting last week that two projects already underway in Brock Township and the Ajax-Pickering area -have worked successfully so far, and by the end of next year, all areas within Durham should - have similar pro- grams in operation. THE REASONS Besides the: obvious de- sireability of assisting seniors to remain 'in their own homes, Mr. Johnston pointed out that the cost of maintaining people in homes for the aged was a determining factor in the decision by the province to allocate the funds for. the project. ~ He said that it costs about. $5000 annually to keep one person in a home for the aged, and- at present there are about 400 people in Durham Region on waiting lists to get into these institutions. The province has contri- buted $63,400. this year and a similar amount next year for the program, and it was pointed out that this amount of money would maintain about 13 people in institu- tions for a year. "If the money can be used to successfully help more than . 13 remain in their own homes for a year, the finan- cial aspect of the 'program would be more than justi- fied. Scugog"s portion of this $63,400. will be $9,000. for 1978-79, and $4500 for 1977- 1978, ' THE SENIORS Statistics compiled in a brief to the province by the Durham - Region: Social Planning. Advisory Group indicate that persons over 61 years of age make up 13 percent of the population of Scugog, 12.9 percent of the Trustee critical of sex education Durham. Board of Educa- tion trustee Alex Keith has claimed that the Board is "missing the boat" by not having some sort of policy related to sex education as sex is an integral part of life. The trustee is quoted as telling the Board at the régular meeting September 26, "to be quite blunt about it, we:all do it or.are going to do it in our lifetime." Although issues. of sexu- ality are dealt with in the family life education pro- gram, sex is not the major emphasis. ENERGY SAVING , A report from the Board's superintendent of plants in- dicated that $150,000 was saved. last year in energy costs, which amount to nearly ten percent. The savings were attribut- ed to co-operation from stu- dents, staff and custodians in the Durham schools. Certificates of merit are being issued by the Board to custodians who save more than 10 percent in energy consuption, and 54 of these certificates have already been issued. Uxbridge's population and more than 22 percent of the total population in Brock Township. In Scugog, the actual number of persons over 61 is 1,563 as of the 1976 census, and the num- bers are expected to in- crease in the future. THE MONEY The province's financial commitment is for two years. An evaluation of the program will be made at that time and it is possible that the provincial funds could be cut off. Because of : this possibility it was stress- ed at the meeting Sep- tember 29 that the local . "board must build a strong and active volunteer group to provide the 'services. Because a small fee for service will be charged in most cases, the program could continue even if the provincial funds are cut off. The October 13 meeting at the Township Offices in Port Perry is scheduled for 7:30 in the evening, and organizers are hoping that interested persons from all the hamlets and communi- ties in Scugog will attend. odd | HPA A ) Q ot Richard Johnston, community care regional co-ordinator and Barbara Carnegie, Scugog Social Planning Council secretary, at a public meeting last week in Port Perry to discuss plans for a local program to assist the elderly.
