Cornish School who spent the afternoon touring the museum and watching and taking part in a variety by Julie Brierly Well the first holiday of the school year is over. 1 hope. everyone had a very happy Thanksgiving dispite the miserable weather. Last Friday the student council held a 'turkey draw". Anyone who had bought an activity card was eligible. Our own Mr. Arcu- les came prepared with paper and pencil to draw the winning number but we convinced him that the proper way to do it was to pick a number out of a bowl. The lucky winner was Steve McIntyre with number 139. Incidentally the numbers 199 and 99 were drawn first. Perhaps those two people will show up next time. On Wednesday October 12 the football teams are going to Pickering - good luck! Unfortunately they lost last Friday to strong teams from McLaughlin. We are Durham Centre needs part-time volunteers Fall programs for the 160 mentally retarded adults and children at Durham Centre are getting under- way. Volunteers are such a vital aspect of the develop- mental process of the retard- ed in such programs as swimming, music, club act- ivities, crafts, reading and . socializing. Volunteers are especially needed for 3 pro- grams involving the adults during the day and 3 pro- grams involving the child- ren. Working as a volunteer at Durham Centre not only gives a community person the opportunity to see what life is like for the institution- al retarded but also a chance to do something very worth- while. Consider what life is giving you right now and-try to find a part you too can play in making someone else's situation much better. Call 668-7745, ext. 435 be- tween 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. High school news told though that the teams are getting better every time they play so we can expé@, a victory shortly. Speaking of football, the first invitational student- teacher football game will be held in activity period on Friday. Any grade 13 stu- dent, male or female, inter- ested in beating the teach-. ers on Friday get in touch with Derek Baker. Also a large cheering section is needed for the students of course. It*should be very exciting. exciting. On Thursday there is a pep rally for the game. Also Thursday is sport shirt day followed by injury day on Friday. Have fun!
