Stouffville captain Ted Assinck scored his second of the night with just 49 seconds remaining on a two- on-one break. Port Perry goalie Charlie Durward made the initial save on the play but Assinck knocked: home the rebound. Durward played a strong, stand-up gamé in the Port Perry nets, blocking 39 shots. He was especially sharp early in the third period when Port Perry played a man short for more than six minutes as the result of a five-minute butt ending penalty to Mike Adam, and minors to Bob Greiner and Bill Owen. Although Stouffville manag- ed to score once while Port Perry was short-handed, Durward made several tough saves to keep his team in the game. Port Perry opened the scoring early in the second period when Stu Cochrane rapped home a rebound from a sharp angle. But Stouffville evened the score less than two minutes later as Assinck beat Durward with a close-in shot along the ice. At the 12 minute mark of the middle frame Dave Nicholson put Flamingos ahead 2-1 when he drilled a hard slap shot from just inside the blue line. The Stouffville net-minder got a piece of the puck but was' not 'able to keep it from crossing the red-line. Stouffville tied the score early in the third period with Flamingos playing a man short. In the opening period both teams played fast, wide open hockey that featured hard hitting without the chippi- ness that marked the game between the two teams play- ed October 9 in Port Perry, Both teams concentrated on hockey throughout most of the game with referee Don Davis handing out four minor to each team, and the five-minute butt-ending penalty to Mike Adam, which carried an automatic game misconduct. The loss brought the team's record to three wins and two losses, both on home ice to the Stouffville squad. On Monday, October 10, Port Perry edged Cobourg 6-5, and October 13 the team played a strong game in Port Hope to earn a 2-1 victory. |, The team is idle until this Saturday when they will meet the Clippers in Stouff- ville, and then return home for a game Sunday night at New Scugog Arena against Cobourg. arena. Durward made several outstanding stops during game despite the loss. Legionnaires win The Legionaires made it two in a row over Peter- borough Sunday night as "they shutout the home side 5-0. The Jones, Young, S. Lee line led the way offensively with Young scoring 'the hat trick. Jones and S. Lee picked up 1 assist each. Other scoring plays were H. Lee - from Johnstone and Henricks from Lane and Johnstone. Jackman in the nets for Port was tested on only a few occasions as his team mates limited Peterborough to a handful of shots on the net. Goreski and Burnett in particular were effective in the body checking depart- ment. Martens played a steady game on defence and first year boys, Johnstone and S. Lee came up with a pretty good 2-way effort, by Brian Mikkelsen. The first period was dominated by the Port Perry boys, as they scored four more unan- swered goals. At 4:40, Jim Daniels scored from Brian Dickson, then 3'%% minutes later, Joe Williams found the mark, assisted by Eric Cro- well and Keith Tremblay. At the 12:25 point, Brian Dick- son scored an unassisted goal then Brian Mikkelsen scored his second goal of the night at 13:36, unassisted. Stouffville came back with two goals in the second period, and one more in the third. The final score of the game came at 10:04 of the third period, when Brian Mikkelsen scored his third goal of the game, again, unassisted. Final score was Port Perry 6, Stouffville 4. Port Perry also was ahead in the penalty department, incurring seven. minor in- fractions, - while Stouffville had five minors.
