As this picture indicates, Karen leads a pretty active life after her three months of treatment for asthma. Ten-year old Karen-Breen of Port Perry is one of the young people who has been helped to manage her chronic asthma through the Family Asthma Rehabilitat- ion Program at the Ontario Crippled Children's Centre in Toronto. Last November Karen took three months of treat- ment at the Centre which offers a one of a kind pro- gram for children who suffer from chronic asthma. Karen has suffered from asthma almost all her life, She was 'referred to the Centre by the family phys- ician, Dr. Wm. Cohoon. Karen spent five days a week there, coming home with the family for weekends. - Mrs. Breen admits she had some initial reservations about putting Karen in the Centre for treatment, but now she has only the highest words of praise for the work that is being done. : Karen to return to grade 5 at ig R.H. Cornish School and take' part in almost all the normal activities of an active 10- year old. Karen swims regularly and is very active in gymnastics. In fact, when the Port Perry Star talked to Karen and her parents at their home last week, she went through a series of cartwheels on the front lawn. The only physical restriction is running, but Mrs. Breen reports that it is difficult trying to curtail this activity. The Crippled Children's Centre says that for some the three-month program is con- sidered the last resort for treatment of the condition. But for most, however, itis a major step in teaching them to understand and control their -asthma. Often the lifestyle has been upset by repeated hospital admiss- ions, school absenteeism and family disharmony. The program teaches the youngster and the parents how to use medication, brea- thing techniques and exer- cises to reduce the effects of asthma. Karen was able to lead a fairly normal life while at the Centre, taking part in sports such as swim- ming and calisthenics, and attending classes in the Centre School.
