It seemed that last week was an exceptionally busy week for some, with wedd- ings, Presbyterial meetings, Offical Board meeting and Island Church Anniversary as well as Tuck shop for the "Head" ladies. The Official Board of the Scugog Pastoral Charge met .at Manchester Church on RAY Wales LARUT LEA SHE AP REO PAS Gad Thurs. evening, when 23 members met with Rev. Clarke and Rev, Linstead. There was a report on missions where we are being requested to raise our objec- tive by 10 percent each year. We are reminded that much of this money stays right in Canada. . There was a discussion re visiting. - The ministers do try to visit the sick in hospi- tal or others in need when informed. The group con- cluded, it is too much to expect retired ministers to do extensive visiting along with their other duties. The elders should plan to visit new residents at least or even older people who are unable to get out. The Church is only as strong as the people make it. All members learned a little more of their responsibilities' 'to the Minister, the church and the people. Future meetings will start at 7:45 p.m. : On the weekend the family of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Pogue helped them celebrate their 40th wedding anniver- sary by taking them out to dinner at the Ali Baba. This included Bill and wife of Oshawa, Gordon and wife of Scugog Island, Grace and husband of Toronto and Roy and his wife in B.C. are naturally too far away. A very interesting wedding took place in the "Head" Museum Church on Sat. when David Chinn and Eliza- beth Elwes-Bush were united in marriage in the same place where David's mother (Helen Colleran) had begg married years earlier by Rev. Fred Joblin. (The Collerans lived in the house on 7A, now owned by Mrs. Myrtle Manns). Following the ceremony, "Head" U.C.W. ladies in appropri- ately long dresses of an earlier era served a turkey dinner in the '"'Head" tea room, to the wedding party and guests and renewed friendship with the Colleran and Chinn families. The happy couple (helicopter pilot and artist) gathered up their pictures and part of the wedding cake to take on their honeymoon to England the next day, where they would visit all of Elizabeth's family. Mr. Bill Middleton is again visiting with his two brothers on a retirement farm in Pembroke. Though the Anniversary Service at the island Church was scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sun., many gathered at 9:30 to hear the lovely music of the Prince Albert Orchestra and enjoy the lovely autumn decorations. By 10 a.m. the church was just about full. Chairs at the back accom- modated some later arriv- als. Many who have not been able to attend regularly made a special effort and felt well rewarded? The guest minister, Rev. Barry Pogue ars Sn SR Ly RAESSIATEAL was introduced by one of the present ministers, Rev. C. Clarke. The choir of 15 voices did a super job. 'Rev. Pogue spent a few minutes reviewing his form- er association with the Past- oral charge and made refer- ence to the historical back- ground given on the Church Bulletins, His subject was "The Church for Today" and suggested that the church should look at itself and see what can be done to make a meaningful congregation. We need a lamp of memory and a knowledge of our roots, to feel that we belong, but we also need to look into the future. Therefore, we must strive to fulfill our dreams for the future. The final thought left with us was that the Church should be a bea- con to the people to let them know. that God cares. After the service, it was noted that all the Bulletins had been picked up and apparently taken home to be treasured. A large number stayed to visit with Rev. and Mrs. Pogue and others as they enjoyed a cup of tea with lunch. Many thanks to all who spent their time and inter- ests in promoting this finest of all Anniversaries. All the musical people are working on a concert for Nov. with the new organ and a man who really knows how to bring out its best. From what we have already seen we know we can expect something outstanding. We'll have more information later. Speaking of music, it will bring to many of our minds, the great talent of Mr. Powell, a former resident of the house now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Brent Richardson on road 7. The Powells 'moved' to 'Oshawa' some years ago and for some time, Mr. Powell's health failed with the result that last week he got his call to go Home, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dowson attended the funeral. Many people have en- quired about Mrs. Chas. Wilson (a former resident) who had a crippling stroke some time ago. At this time we wish therefore to report that she is still in the Port Perry Hospital and she is getting more use of her limbs on the right side where there was paralysis. She can also talk a little. However she has a long way to go for recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Fedyk returned last week from their lengthy vacation in Switzerland and England. - While they were away, Mrs Helen Hortop served as a good neighbour, The Island 4-H club is now well in to their course with 10 girls taking part. Five Island girls that we know of, are taking (the at "Child Care" course at the | ! High Schobl. It certainly good training for any y girls over 12.
