December meeting of the Mental treeiment services lacking A report by a volunteer agency says that mental . health 'diagnostic and treat- ment services are non-exis- tent in the northern munici- palities of Durham Region. The report, prepared by Mental Health-Durham goes ole make 25 recommenda- fons, one of which is that Whitby Psychiatric Hospital be designated as a Regional Mental Health Centre and' be given the resources to provide assessment, treat- ment, follow-up and pre- ventive services to persons in need of in-patient and-or out-patient care. ' Peterson honorary chairman One of the world's fore- most jazz pianists, and many time award winner, Oscar Peterson has been named Canadian Honorary Chairman of the 1977 Christ- mas Seal Campaign. Mr. Peterson has won the Down- beat award 12 times for best jazz pianist of the year, and has been nominated five times by the national Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for recording the best album of the year." A talented composer, his "Canadian Suite" and "Hymn of Freedom' are frequently requested by audiences. A native of Montreal, Oscar Peterson started studying piano and trumpet at age five, but had to abandon the trumpet after developing tuberculosis of the lung. Mr. Peterson says he considers himself lucky and fortunate that he was left with no permanent ill effects after his 13 months of treatment, and has ex- pressed a desire to help in the fight against tubercu- losis and other lung diseas- es as the Honarary Christ- mas Seal Chairman. i A APR LEON GO EWA Re Ae Steve Lurie, director of Mental Health-Durham, and one of the authors of the report, said in an interview last week that at present there is no psychiatrist working in Scugog, Ux- bridge or Brock, and sug- gested the establishment 'of satellite clinics operating a couple of days each week, providing diagnostic and treatment services on an out-patient basis. He indicated that the authors of the report reach- ed these conclusions on the basis of surveys taken over the last two years, and through conversations with professionals and. other in- volved persons in the com- munities. At present persons need- ing treatment can be referr- ed to the Oshawa General Hospital, and the more ser- ious cases to the Whitby Hospital. A copy of the brief has been sent to the recently formed Durham District Health Council along with a recommendation that a de- tailed study of mental health services in the Region be carried out. While there is no hard data at present pertaining to the numbers of persons in the three northern munici- palities who might need these services, Mr. Lurie "said that in any given muni- cipality up to 25 percent of the population could require help for mental disorders, ranging from very mild to severe. And in the past decade or so, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of persons seeking and-receiving treatment for mental disorders. The brief, which is titled "The Future Role and pro- grams of Whitby Psychiat- ric Hospital" has been pre- sented to the McKinsey Study Team, a private con- sulting' firm presently carrying out a study for the provincial government of the mental hospitals servic- ing the Metropolitan Toronto area.
