The activities are integrated into regular class studies to allow students to relate their field experiences to academic work in the class room. Additional activities are being developed which illus- trate fish and wildlife man- agenient carried out hy the Ministry of Natural Resour- ces, as well as land use, planning and forest manage- ment. Part of the underlying pur- pose of the project is to expose students-to the prin- cipals of natural resource "management, and hopefully the active participation by the students will help them achieve a greater degree of awareness about the natural environment. The formal agreement set- --£+« ting up the Educational area cane into effect January 1 of this year, and this agree- ment is to run for an initial term of five years. Costs involved in operating the project are shared by the Ministry and the Durham Board of Education. Part of the physical facil- ities of the area were provid- ed by students from schools «in the Region. The class- room building, for example, was constructed by students in the building trades course at Port Perry High School. Students from Anderson Col- legiate worked on site design and plans, and a floating platform to be used for aqua- tic studies on the Nonquon River was constructed by students from O'Neill Colleg- iate. The project has obvious - ,advantages to both the Board of Education and the Students from all over Durham Region will have the opportunity to study plant and animal life in the natural environment of the 87 acre.education area made up of marsh, waterways and bush-land.
