A good deal of the corn silage is now too dry, how- ever farmers need it for feed. This can also lead to heating in the silage and lower feed value. Most of the silage is now in the silo, so there-is not much that can be done in terms of recommendations regarding length of cut, rapid filling and so on. Feed test results coming back from Guelph indicate that corn silage and high moist- ure cob corn is drier than we would like. Livestock producers are probably going to notice lower feed intake and they will have to compensate for this, using feeds such, as grain. Feed bunks should be cleaned regularly, so fresh feed is in front of the cattle. Top dressing the feed with molasses might also im- prove consumption. Low moisture silage also spoils quicker when exposed to air, so feeding should be done in smaller amounts. Producers should check for moldy silage or silage that is heat- ing because if bad enough, this can cause problems in your cattle.
