daca SES ASANTE | Petition to remove Blackstock horses Calling the situation 'very serious" and potentially -dangerous, a Blackstock couple has asked that the Township take some kind of action to remove two horses which they claim are being stabled in a garage in the hamlet. . Mr. and Mrs. David Gainey, of 14 Mason Street, Blackstock, told council Monday evening that a petit- ion of people living in the immediate area where the horses are being kept indicates that 87 per cent of them want the animals removed. While most members of council appeared. sym pathetic to the request, it was pointed out that the Township is powerless to act on the matter at this time because there is no by-law for Blackstock which would prohibit the keeping of live- stock or any other animals. Mrs. Gainey told members of council that the two horses, a mare and a colt, are being stabled in a garage attached to their neighbour's house, with only a snow fence around the yard. She said that last Monday one of the horses escaped from the yard, presenting a threat to the safety of her own child Soccer coach gets jacket Brian Yeo was pleasantly surprised Sunday afternoon when members of his soccer team, the Orange Bombers, presented him with a team jacket in appreciation of the work he did as coach of the team during the past season. The jacket is in the team colours, orange and black. Jail term A Port Perry man was sentenced to jail Thursday in Oshawa provincial court after being convicted of criminal negligence in the operation of a car. Judge Donald B. Dodds told Brian K. Tripp, 19, that he "grievously abused" his driving privileges while try- ing to avoid arrest for drunk driving. The judge sentenc- ed Tripp to two months in jail and suspended his licence for a year. Mr. Gainey pointed out that the owners of the horses, whom he did not name, are keeping the horses for their daughter, and are unwilling to board the horses else- where. Mrs. Gainey told council that she raised a petition among 32 residents living in the area bounded by Mary, Alexander, Scugog and Mason Streets in Blackstock, and 28 of them said they - wanted the horses removed. Mrs. Gainey added that in addition 'to the threat to children's safety, there is an odour and fly problem from the animals. She said that on contacting the health department, she 'was told that little could be done without a governing by-law of the municipality. After listening to Mr. and Mrs. Gainey, council pointed out that passing a by-law would not necessarily get rid of this specific problem, Theatre group perform for students at PPHS Last Friday morning the Toronto-based Theatre Hour Company came to Port High to prove "The Exception and the Rule", Bertolt Brecht's difficult proletarian one-act teaching drama. The six professional players kept senior students engrossed as a merchant-autocrat sub- jugated a coolie-worker to symbolic degradation, then death---a crime, for which he was later exonerated by blind justice. Brecht's message strikes home. Twentieth Century play- wright Brecht uses many techniques to deliver this message to his audience: - music, choral speaking, mime, and strongly drawn characterizations. All were managed capably by the troupe. a After their hour-long per- formance, the actors con- ducted a brief question and answer period for the stu- dents, giving them an opportunity to: learn more about live theatre in Canada, for Police Tripp, who had a previous conviction for drunk driving, was charged with negligence after a chase Aug. 29 along Oshawa streets with speeds of up to 140 km p.h. The engagement was made possible through' the St.Lawrence Centre, Arls Council grants, the High School Drama Department; and student admissions. At one point his car almost hit another turning onto the road. The constable followed him to Ritson Road to Bloor Street hack to Ritson to Olive to Drew Street to Banting Avenue to Court Street and back to Olive where the cruiser forced Tripp off the road. A passenger in the car scuffled with the constable who called for assistance. Tripp had .17 and .18 milli- grams of alcohol in his system at the time. Defence counsel Bruce Affleck said his client dis- agreed with the speeds and that the incident after the car was stopped was instiga- ted by the police constable's attitude. HUMAN REACTION Judge Dodds said any atti- tude of the constable was a '"'very human reaction' con- sidering he had just risked his life to stop Tripp from endangering others lives. The judge said it was apparent Tripp did not understand the responsibili- ties of driving. Tripp said he had been drinking but the judge said that would not have concerned any widows. and orphans Tripp might have created. Tripp was also placed on probation for 18 months with orders to stay out of all licensed premises. He was also recommended for the Temporary Absence Pro, . gram. because the regulation could not be made retroactive. And a by-law could take up to two years to bring into existence, because of poss- ible objections which would -mean a timg consuming hearing before the Ontario Municipal Board.
